Biden, "Buy an electric car and you will save $80 per month" He obviously didn't do the math.

The link said the carbon footprint, depending on the comparison, becomes equal usually around 14,000 to 18,000 miles. Average person drives between 12,000 and 15,000 miles a year. So, on average, the footprint would become equal somewhere around the 12 to 18 month mark. Quicker if you drive more. Less, if you're a little old lady who only drives 5,000 miles a year.

It was not cost effective overnight. The first crude pulled from the ground cost years of research and development as well as refining of the process. Few good investments make money overnight.

My point is that this is likely similar.
Given time it will become the most cost effective way.

Thing is, they didn't shoot the horses as they were doing their research.

Also, I believe I read where electric cars were produced before ICE cars. What happened?

Electric, gas, and to a lesser extent, steam all competed in the beginning.

Ranges were similar, but in the late 19th century the electric grid and power production were very poor, particularly rural areas. Plus we had the oil.

My son did a cost analysis between a 30K Camry and a 50K Tesla. Factoring in cost of gas, maintenance and insurance the two equal out over 7 seven years. The only problem with the Tesla is the cost is more upfront with the savings in the outer years. Thus higher monthly payments.

I'm not knocking this analysis one bit - just want to point out that an even better real life analysis would be to use your friend's math, but then figure resale value for each vehicle sold at various stages. 3,5,10 years...

Well I learned something new. AAA will not help you if you’re driving an electric car. Something about the car being too heavy. Anyone else heard this?

    I hadn't. And I don't see anything.

The only roadside issue Im aware of is towing. Many EVs need a flat bed because there is no way to disengage the wheels from the motors

Plus the ICE cars were able to run on the gasoline which was a waste product in the production of kerosene.

Yup. Abundant, "no drawbacks", simultaneously promote another domestic industry. Electric infrastructure by comparison seemed daunting.

Now it's not daunting. It's just a matter of political will.

    The universe is funny.

In car and NPR is playing Freakonomics (#498) on the history of the EV.

And within the Nissan lineup you have a comparably sized Sentra that gets 29/39 mpg for $8K less than the LEAF. I believe that that is the point many here are trying to make: from an economic perspective it takes a long time to get back that additional up front $8K in the differences between buying the power to charge the electric and buying the gas to run the ICE.

$30k for that butt-ugly car? It's not much better than a golf cart. Now if you want to talk about the F-150 Lightning, ok now yer talkin.

I have an EV6 and it’s the best car I’ve ever owned. I’ve had free charging the past month, it drives so smooth and it’ll smoke 99% of ICE vehicles out there. I had to rent a car for work last week and it made me realize just how much better EVs are after not riding in one for two months.
