Auburn's Todd Golden 'won't quit and won't lose' “He won’t quit and he won’t lose. We credit his mom for that. She’s the mean one,” Scott Golden says, laughing again. “It’s incredible. Ever since he started playing recreational sports, he’s had the ability to persevere. He just got it. No matter what the sport was, he saw things before they happened.” Todd Golden wants to be a head coach one day, and his history says that will probably happen. For now, he says he’s focused on helping Pearl revive Auburn basketball and enjoying every minute of it. “The long hours and the time I have to put in for this job, I have no problem with,” Golden says. “It’s stuff I enjoy doing, whether it be working out with kids on the court, recruiting kids to come to Auburn or just teaching them everyday life stuff, it’s enjoyable to be a part of this program.”
— Looking at their schedule, they scored 97, 98, 105 and 111 this season. I like that. 2021-22 San Francisco Dons Schedule | ESPN
KenPom Top 20 defense, Top 40 offense (and they fell to KenPom #22 after last night's loss). Hard to argue with those metrics. Y'all got yourself a good one (albeit sometimes a little "too" fiery from a rival's point of view)
Used to play against Montverde back in the day. Further back then that. Back when they were a member of the Lake and Hills conference.
This!^ Good god S/S! You got bailed out when CMW left in his own accord. Even saved up some money. I thought he would try to get some of yhe guys mentioned above Did he try to contact Mark Few?
I have no idea how all this will work out, but as a numbers and stats guy, I can’t begin to tell you how happy this part makes me.
Love that EF likes this hire and talks about the coach liking analytics. White was completely clueless when it came to them. So glad we've moved on.
i think his staff will be critical. I’m hearing he may bring two of his guys. Pastrana could be retained and that would be a smart move.
A couple SEC schools were interested. I don’t think it ever got to competing offers, as I think Golden preferred Florida from the jump. I think you may see msu get McMahon.
Interesting, but very high risk. Hopefully the guy recruits his ass off, starting with keeping at least our recruiting class and a couple returnees as a base. The concern is coming from San Francisco, it’s hard to see him having built in relationships to get an immediate infusion of talent all the way across the country to FL. No matter who the coach was going to be, you have to be extremely concerned about next year’s roster. But we’ll see I guess. Just keeping things from bottoming out (talent wise) will be his first challenge.
Many of us had become extremely frustrated of the Gators' increasing inability to close out games after leading (Oral Roberts last year still burns). The kenpom.com blog says (I think) Golden will be better than White handling leads: "Being bored with the foul-up-3 debate a few years back, I did an exhaustive analysis on the benefits of fouling when tied late in the game. And others have wondered if there are some advantages to fouling when leading by one or two late in the game. Occasionally, you see a team accidentally try one of these strategies when a player forgets the score. But for the most part, anyone entertaining the viability of these approaches must do so in a theoretical way. That is, until last season when San Francisco’s coaching staff, led by head coach Todd Golden and director of operations Jonathan Safir, decided to embrace the power of math to squeeze out advantages when time and score dictated. It started when the Dons’ decided to not concede the final possession of the first half to Pacific in a game on January 11. While outside the scope of this piece, the math on this is pretty basic and more teams should do it. \It continued two weeks later when they decided to foul up 2 with 17 seconds left against BYU. They were also prepared to implement such a strategy in games against Gonzaga if the situation arose. In two of the three games against the Zags, it nearly did..."
That's why I hope Coach Golden retains some of UF's staff, like aka mentioned with regards to retaining Pastrana.
