There’s something about McCasland that the more I read and watch, the more he is my favorite among the mid-major guys.

The circumstances were a bit different then. I think Foley felt that he could take a bit of a chance. The bottom fell out the year before and Lon bolted. Expectations were low.

We're in a different place. Program is treading water, trying to stay relevant and quickly losing ground to others in the SEC. Stricklin has (and should have) more pressure on him to get it right. If he doesn't, and God forbid Napier doesn't bring us back, he's history.

 

i think he is a really good coach, and I watched his team play in person this year…. versus fau. But very defensive minded. . . and typically low scoring. I think they lost in conference final with score under 40 pts.
Truth is…. Baylor is not an offense-first program, and as a result, neither is its coaching tree.

 

Anthony Grant had better credentials than most of these guys at the end of his VCU days. Since then, he has coached at Alabama, the NBA and, now, Dayton. He also has been mentored by Billy. I think it's foolish to go after some of these inexperienced guys

 

Yeah, that was something that definitely gave pause. Lots of pros and cons with all these guys.

 

Perhaps.

But these are not “the end of his VCU days”.

Large portions of his time after is what gives some folks pause.

Or a young Mike White. We obviously don’t have the Midas touch as it relates to young up and coming coaches as the last 7 years have proved.

 

Grant clashed with boosters and some important AAU figures in Alabama. The beginning of his demise at Bama was when Trevor Lacey transferred out because his AAU coach and parents wanted him to play more point guard.

He has history in Florida, though. Obviously he was an assistant here for ten years and is from Miami Senior. His name would still carry a lot of weight among the people who run Florida AAU basketball, whereas he was dealing with a hostile Alabama AAU network after Lacey transferred out.

He's got a good thing going at Dayton. They're going to be a borderline Top 25 team in preseason rankings next year. Running a high-major program is a different animal but I do think he'd do better here than at Bama.

 

I bet the portion of the fanbase who doesn't want Grant because of his tenure at Bama would feel differently had the 2019-2020 tournament been played. Dayton was going to get a #1 seed.

 

Maybe this has been mentioned, but I didn't realize that SS was assistant communication's director at Baylor when Scott Drew became their coach. They are about the same age too. The Sun reported today that they worked closely together that first year. So there's that.

 

Why wouldn't we hire McMahon?

Another appeal of Grant would be that he could assemble an all-star staff of Donovan-era names. He'd almost certainly bring McCall with him; McCall was let go from UMass this year and there's heavy speculation he'll go to Dayton as an assistant. Maybe he could bring in an unnamed former player as well

 

I really like AG as a person, loved him as an assistant…. and was excited to have him as our next coach before Billy head-faked the Magic.
But I watched much of his tenure at Bama, and that…. maybe unfairly… poisoned the well for me.
He has done well at Dayton, though his defining year was with the nations top player. Yes- he probably deserves credit for finding and developing that player… so again, I acknowledge not being totally fair here. I also have not watched a ton of Dayton, so my overriding opinion revolves around Bama. The offenses there were anemic and his results only moderately better. In addition, Grant is a very steady personality…. which should be an attribute. But I really think Florida needs a sellable style of basketball, as well as a pitchman.
And for those reasons… I’m out.

Being in on Shaka and being out on Grant makes no sense at all, though.
