He may be really good but gonna be really hard to unseat Guscette. He will prove to be a very good defensive receiver this year and he’ll swing it better than ya think too. Kid has been doing special things since he was 14. If Lastres plays a lot this year it’ll be due to injuries. I’ve watched some practice and scrimmage time and think Lastres is adjusting well. That adjustment to the college game is tough on any freshman and especially catchers. we’ve been beyond lucky to grab guys over the years like Zunino, Rivera, and Guscette. Heady guys that can flat out play. Interestingly enough our luck in SW Florida with catchers has been great with:
    Zunino ( Mariner-Cape Coral)
    LaPorta-Charlotte High
    Rivera-Venice
    Guscette-Venice

As I’m sure you well remember—ol’ Brian Jeroloman out of Wellington was a pretty dang good catch and throw guy too.

I cleaned up the OP lineup putting Guscette back as the starting catcher batting 6th. Top 5 in the order look solid with Sully but the bottom of the order remains to be seen. I put Calilao in as the DH and still backing up 1st and RF but I wouldn't be surprised if Prevesk gets time at DH and who knows where. Its a good problem to have.

Calilao has shown that he will preform under pressure situations and has come through in big moments. FSU Walkoff, Kentucky 3 run HR for the win, Georgia 2 HR in one series (just as a few examples). Kenny has the clutch gene which our team will need this year. Calilao led the team in RBI his freshman year and when he is hot...he's hot. Calilao performs at his best in SEC play and had no errors at first base. Would be very surprised to not see him in the lineup.

Hot off the presses, I'll be typing up my scrimmage report from tonight's practice here shortly. It was a homerun derby of sorts with a few good nuggets along the way. I'm glad that Ethan got to tweet the 2 HRs by Langford but there were several others of note. Also you'll be interested in the great pitching I saw by one particular arm out there tonight. Unfortunately it was just one.

    Notes from scrimmage

    Pitching -
Manning Well the main good point was all about Manning. Starting for the Orange he pitched great and went 4 full innings giving up no runs and only 3 hits, 1 of those on a well placed bunt. Manning looked great, in that he no longer relies on the big breaking ball. He is throwing fastball, a more normal curve, and a decent little slider and mixing them up very well. He stayed in command giving up no walks with 4 strike outs. He looks ready to go as a starter.
Ursitti Not much to say but he came on in relief up 11 with 3 outs to go to go and gave up 3 runs. His first pitch to Lastres was deposited half way up the stairs in left. After 2 more walks he gave up a bases clearing double to Calilao to finish the scoring.
Abner Starting for the Blue he pitched very good for 2 innings having to deal with a runner in scoring position in both innings but not letting it bother him. For instance in the first inning Jud got on from a walk and made it to third. While there it was clear Jud was instructed to make as much distractions on the base paths as he could like running towards home after every pitch to try and get a reaction but Abner stayed focused and got out of the first 2 unharmed. Then in the 3rd it all broke lose. Abner got the first batter Rivera to ground out but then gave up a homerun over the deep center wall to Langford followed by a single to Riopelle and another homerun to Armstrong that went oppo to right. After getting out of the 3rd he came back out for the 4th and couldn't throw a strike in warmups. He managed to get the lead off hitter Jud out on a towering fly ball to the warning track in right but then gave up a walk to Rivera another homerun by Langford oppo to right center and then a walk to Riopelle ended his night after 5 runs had scored and his runner at first made it 6 runs in all..
Jameson Then Jameson came in for the Blue and it kept going downhill from there. Put it this way in both the 4th and 5th innings that Jameson pitched both innings had to be stopped by the dugout before he could get the third out. He gave up 5 runs in 1 and 2/3.

    Fielding-
Best play of the night came from Langford in LF who made a diving grab stealing a short line drive hit off of Halter's bat. Halter almost made a Halter Alter on a diving stab at second but his throw was late and Calilao was unable to get a glove on it. The runner stayed preventing a error on the throw. The main error made was by Evans for the Blue in RF who dropped a fly ball from Prevesk. Overall the fielding was good with few questionable calls to be made. The catchers all had a few passed balls but they didn't effect the outcome in a negative way. Jud did steal third in the first inning off of Abner without a throw from Lastres. Guscette started at 3rd and later moved behind the plate.

    Hitting -
After a low run scoring weekend it seems Sully decided to shakeup the usual 5 man batting order for the Orange and he went Thompson, Jud, Rivera, Langford and Riopelle. Obviously it worked with the Orange scoring 11 runs from 4 homeruns and 3 doubles. Write it down, Wyatt Langford is our starting left fielder and as Ethan says use a sharpie. He is crushing the ball right now with just about any pitch. That leaves Jud in center and Thompson in right. The amount of RBIs and runs they will score will far outweigh any lack of defense over the whole season. Jud BTW remained cautious at the plate, only struck out once and got 2 walks, then later hit a bomb to left that cleared the berm. As to what happens with Armstrong, Calilao and Deric that's TBD. Armstrong is doing very well at third and making very good throws to first usually on a line. He can start at 1st or 3rd. Deric has shown no problems at third or shortstop making good throws but they usually tale off a little from third. We all know Calilao who is really good in the OF and is probably our best defensive 1st basemen. I'm fine with any combination of those three but there's only 2 positions. Coming from Ocala I hope to see Jud, Sterlin and Deric all get to start on Opening Day. I will be proud to say we had 1/3 of the starters from Ocala if it happens. But I won't be surprised if we see more of Armstrong at 3rd when SEC play comes around with Calilao back at 1st. Defensively it might be best if Armstrong is the DH but he really has been solid at 3rd and 1st this year, really! So why waste the DH on someone who deserves to be in the field. That might change once the season gets going but for now look for Armstrong to start at 1st or 3rd.

Thanks much for the breakdown. Unless Armstrong has improved a lot with the glove, I can't see him playing much at 1st. Calilao is the much better defender and his experienced, proven clutch bat just has to be in the lineup somewhere, right? But Armstrong's powerful bat has to be in the lineup as well. So maybe he adapts at 3rd or just reverts to DH. But I'd be fine with Fabian at 3rd, Calilao in RF and Armstrong at 1st if that's how it plays out. But with the experience those 2 guys have, it will take a special freshman to replace them as starters. Seems like the quality depth is going to be an interesting dilemma for Sully to have to sort out.

Hey 87- Thanks for the detailed write up and analysis- well done.
That's two excellent outings in a row from Manning- saw him pitch last Wednesday and was near flawless- striking out 4, no walks and only two soft excuse me hits- one of which should have been caught. And yes, Manning was mixing up several pitches and moving the ball in and out up and down. Encouraging
Abner had one of those nights- that will happen. I am still in his corner as an option for starting job-... or top relief. No doubt, Sully is hunting for the shutdown guy in relief - especially one who throws strikes.
Sorry to say-- Jameson has not impressed the 2-3 times I've seen him.
Those oppo. HRs leads me to think there must have been a steady west wind blowing last night- (there was).
Pieces seem to be coming together and we'll see how Sully juggles his basket of riches. Penciling in D. Fabian at 3rd may be a bit premature. His range is very good but I too have seen some of his throws sail some- and his hitting and contact is down the last three scrimmages-seemed overmatched vs Coppola on Saturday- but so did everyone on Blue except Halter. Playing Armstrong at 3rd last night may be a signal that Sully may again be considering him at 3rd, with Calilao at first- experience matters. A slimmed down Armstrong seems quicker and more agile- and as a former pitcher has the arm for the hot corner. Juggling the different options will continue likely well into the pre-SEC games.
Any word on scrimmage schedule for the week?

    @Matherly87–

I only have one question for clarification—

In the grand scheme of things—does a well placed bunt mean as much as a well placed triple?…..

    No fair asking @WESGATORS!:ninja3:

I guess it depends if you can stretch the said well placed bunt into a well placed triple.

I know its hard to believe but I haven't seen Armstrong make a bad play with his glove since the fall and that was maybe once or twice. If he keeps playing the way he has I don't see how you keep him off the field.
