We both have one 5* (we took theirs) five 4* and the only difference is they have 5 more 3 stars than us (4vs9) our recruit avg is higher 89.84 to their 89.57 and that's with our kicker averaged in. And we have five less recruits.
On FSU's "The Porch", they are poor mouthing their class. Saying they can never compete with the SEC in recruiting and that they are bound for mediocrity forever going forward.
Well if Napier was going into his third year and he pulled in the class FSU just signed how do you think our fans would be reacting? Would we be ok with that class. I think the answer is obvious. And this year was with both UF and UM just having undergone coaching changes and both now having apparent recruiters in place as coaches. It’s not going to get easier for them. I’d be pretty depressed if I was a FSU fan too (and not just because of the obvious reason I was an FSU fan).
Bingo. Norvell had the recruiting table set - rivals in coaching turmoil, his 3rd cycle, good legacy and long time commitments, and he did not capitalize. It is like our game this year where we’re without coaches (hc, dc etc) and on a losing streak and norvell laid an egg. Anyone with a brain sees that the only questions are when and how much. When does norvell get fired and how much does it cost.
Exactly, he had everything in place then lost the QB to coach prime. He should have been able to take advantage of the current landscape (particularly in state) and he didn't. Not sure if losing his OC had anything to do with it but maybe. he did do well in the trenches as someone else mentioned.
The turmoil at UF & Miami probably helped Norvell a bit with say a guy like Thomas but the fact that he has only won 8 games in 2 years further damages FSU's brand. They are at rock bottom. FSU just concluded its 4th consecutive losing season To put this in perspective, their state rivals have NEVER experienced that kind of poverty in the modern football era. Miami in the early 1970s and Florida only in the 1930s. This is a collapse of EPIC proportions. Bringing FSU back to being a national power again will take a long time.
I was talking w/an FSU fan yesterday and I said to em “of the standard set by FSU is competing for conference and natty titles, then can you see Memphis Mike having FSU in that position by the start of the 2024 season, then you gotta be vetting who’s the next man as the HC” because he and I BEEN knew that Memphis Mike “aint it”
The ONLY reason he should even get until 2024 is because of the Covid year. Really 2023 should have been his year but I think everyone gets a pass for recruiting a bump class during Covid, and you probably need a couple seasons with that class to get results. Still, FSU getting a bump class (this is their bump if you throw out Covid year) in the teens is surprising. They loaded up on the right guys (that OL class is great) but they also completely whiffed on WR, will be running with a new OC next year (promoted OL coach who is a rising star), and are busy promoting washed up or inexperienced analysts to fill voids of coaches they lost on offense and defense. They are also endlessly searching for a QB and even if Duffy is it, it’s maybe 2 years before he’s showing out. They may be happy with the made up system for victory that is the 247 composite rankings but that’s really all they have going on, and even then yesterday was a complete embarrassment and they are nowhere near the top 7ish range you would expect from a bump class at the big 3.
I think this is what makes FSU, UF and Miami fans (UCF now too) so frustrated. There hasn't been an opportunity like this in several decades with every major state program being down, and even with all the prestige of all 3 programs, nobody seems to be able to take advantage of this opportunity to take control of the state.
Absolute trash hires by all the schools hurt. Add in $aban dropping Chargers everywhere, Kirby & his bags, Dabo, AU, & lsu it's all been a complete air raid on the state. Looks like BN, MC, & to a smaller extent Mid Major Mike the state finally has some HCs that can slow, then stop the bleeding.
In the last 4 years UF has won 70% of its games. That would place us in the top 15 in the country. And while we fired our coach, we are down only if you qualify being down as not competing for a National Championship. FSU is down at generationally bad level. 4 straight losing seasons. A 41% winning percentage. They only had one narrow 4-year gap in the 70s pre-Bowden where they were this bad. Like ever in their history. While yesterday's class was better for FSU, only 6 of the 15 signees were blue chip (4 or 5 star). And reportedly the top signee wants out. Compare this to UF who in a transition year yesterday assembled 6 blue chips out of the 8 (non-kicker) signees. FSU by never crossing the 50% blue chip gap (even in a good year!) will continue to drift further and further away from national relevance.
Agree with the jist of your thread, but if this season (sans Bama game) completely unraveling didn't clearly demonstrate that the team was down and broken, I'm not sure what would. Not just the embarrassing losses to USC and Mizzou and close call to Samford, but the way we got manhandled at the LOS on both sides of the ball by Vandy in a 42-0 win. I could see that the team was physically down in the USF game. But to your point, we still have a lot of talent and fixing UF is going to be a much easier task than completely changing the culture at FSU.
Agree, there is a huge difference in being broken for 6 games and being broken for 4 long years. We fired our coach for it.
