Jud is only 20. Plenty of time and still has the leverage. You don’t see light tower power like his very often.
Well said and congratulations to the Fabians for birthing two Florida Gators on the same baseball team. Incredible!

There's been some speculation that Jud was a problem with the team chemistry and while I don't have personal insight, I just don't believe it. Wil Dalton said he's a great kid who works harder than anyone he's ever known. Having a guy with this kind of talent and character back means a lot to the 2022 team and I think he'll provide the leadership that will help next year's team achieve quite a lot.
I don't believe the speculation either. I might find out more insider info as time goes by but that's not my focus. If some of the players work ethic was getting called out by others, that could cause division if the whole team hasn't bought in. And after awhile the leaders could have stepped back if everyone wasn't on the same page. Whether that's any possibility or not who knows. But it has to be a good thing with Jud getting his brother on the team with as much drive and determination that Jud is use to. I just hope all the freshmen coming in are getting ready for relentless effort.
Ethan really nailed this one. Great job looking at who we have. Looking ahead at the 2022 baseball roster | GatorCountry.com
I cleaned up the first two posts some more and added Greenfield back in since Ethan still has him listed. If my calculations are any where close to correct, I have us at 38 on the roster, counting the players returning in the first post and the incoming from the second post. That of course will still change somewhere or other.
I had not heard about Caglionone having Tommy John surgery and missing 2022 either. That is somewhat big news as he is not only a quality pitcher, but can hit and play multiple positions. Also, that Gator Country article shows Ryan Cabarcas coming back. But 247Sports shows him entering the Transfer Portal 6/24. Did he withdraw? SEC baseball players in the NCAA Transfer Portal 2021
I'm surprised Cal is coming back- I see little opportunity for him behind the plate. Lastres was the top rated catcher in the state and among the best in the country. He will give Guscette and Riopelle comp for playing time after a while. Key as many have noted is pitching. Sproat, Manning and Leuthje have to step up big time. I don't expect much from Pogue or Nesbitt this year-- maybe some innings in second half of season.
All great points 77— You always need to have yourself in an non compromising position with respect to catcher—it’s hard on their playing time but with the way injuries hit you need catchers that don’t cause you to lose a step when they step in. Pitching without question is going to have to grow up fast this coming season.
Agreed. With the grind of the season it will be good to keep the guy behnd the plate fresh... Hierarchy will emerge but keeping guys from wearing down important. I sense the day-to day grind affected Hickey hitting down the stretch. He was behind the plate day in and day out with Guscette out and Cal a weak bat.
My guess is Cal may want to get into coaching or perhaps trying to get an advanced degree. Or it could be as simple as love of the game and he knows this is the end of the road and wants one more go round. I'm sure he has determined the odds of significant playing time already.
Good work 87. Initially I thought 38 players was awfully high for a D1 team to carry, but I counted 39 players listed on the 2021 roster. I expect there will be a few shifts to the roster before opening day, but overall I think we now have a much clearer picture of the potential contributors on the 2022 team. A handful of freshmen will have an opportunity to beat out a veteran and a bunch of new pitchers will get a chance to prove themselves. Pretty solid core group coming back, though. Finding 7-8 reliable pitchers will be the key, IMO.
I think Cal has an eye toward being a coach, he has plenty of experience under Sully and a raft of assistants, I will always think of his dedication had a chance to sit with him at one of the Dugout Club functions he is a pretty bright kid, see the same outcome for Brady Smith and Lang if he doesn't move up in a few years he will be on a HS or CC roster as a coach
Clarifying a few things: 1. Cabarcas indeed did enter the transfer portal. I forgot about that and will update the article accordingly. 2. Greenfield has another year of eligibility and hasn't stated whether he intends to use it. Until he says otherwise, I'm going to assume he's playing here next year. 3. The Caglianone news is listed on his draft profile on MLB.com. I didn't realize this was breaking news. Him likely taking a medical redshirt is purely speculation on my part based on the typical recovery timeline.
Thanks for your input and keeping us straight on the details. I hope to see you at a fall practice if I don't get kicked out. Shot in the dark, if you had to name our 3 weekend pitcher rotation today, who would you go with? Thanks for playing along.
