Couldn't disagree with you more. If you are going to Akron, you'll have troubles. If you are going to the Cleveland Browns, you will have trouble. You go to top programs with winning traditions, track record of boosting careers, and pay good money to be an assistant, you will get staff. TONS of mid level conference teams with good assistants ready to make the jump in career and money. TONS.
IMO I think he still ends up a Gator. The reality is we are still the top job on the market. He is a hyper competitive guy and he wants to prove he is an elite coach. Could he do it at UCLA, ASU, or wherever? Sure. But it is a heck of a lot easier to do it at Florida. And there are no brownie points for doing it somewhere else. Rings are rings. At the end of the day, provided all the offers are similar (which we have to believe we are competitive), I think we win out. Also we all need to step back and understand what an Insider is. They aren't Scooter. They aren't SOS. It is largely imperfect knowledge from imperfect sources (second, third, fourth hand or even fed to them as misdirections). And most importantly when it comes to recruits or coaching searches they don't know what is going through the mind of CK or a recruit. The reality is this is intense sophisticated negotiations. CK and Dunn realize that. Of course they are playing UCLA/Florida. Just like Florida/UCLA are playing CK. They are all trying to get the upper hand. They are all trying to use the media. They are all trying to use fan emotions. We are all pawns in this game. CK could have used UF to get UCLA to fire Mora, and has no interest in UF at all other than as a leverage ploy to UCLA. He may not have any interest in UCLA and may just be using them to get as much as he can out of Florida. He may actually be torn. Literally nobody knows except CK (and honestly his own agent may not even know).
I am not disagreeing but let’s think this though. How does the statement above jive with the info that it was a done did but couldn’t be announced until UF’s season was over?
Absolutely not, I will not go back though 1100 pages. But yes the titles and post saying to be patient by you and others have lead us to believe Kelly was a done deal. Now, without call to question anyone’s intentions I have to ask myself was it all an attempt to get me to buy a premium pass to the Den.
You should read all the replies that go with that tweet. Very entertaining and indicative of how dynamic this particular coaching search is for all involved.
Chip has a lot of blame for what a disaster SF was last year. They were a bad team that he made worse by being stubborn. You're seeing it as those guys coaching for a program/team. Most of those guys are coaching for the head coach, not the program/team. If a connected guy landed with Browns, he'd land great assistants. Same is true of a connected guy landing at Vandy. I don't know how connected Campbell is or his reputation in the coaching profession, so I'm not taking a stance here. I'm saying that's the risk of a young, unproven coach. However, if a guy is respected enough and connected enough in the profession, he'll get his staff. Sean McVay is a great example of that.
Agreed, this is getting more weird by the minute. Only thing I can think of is we wanted to have it done ASAP, those rumored hangups with the payout delayed that. UCLA opened up, and whatever the hell else has happened the past 7 days made it even more tricky. I'm lost on what the thought process is/was at this point bro lol The thing that made me think maybe SS wanted to do it by that time or move on is the rumored deadline of Sunday for Chip to make a decision on our offer.
I think the real question is: Will he get the right mix of coaches, and know when to cut bait when he sees its not working out. I like coaches that don't let friendship dictate their staffs, even in the face of terrible track records. And it happens more than it should.
I think that’s the true downfall of Mac’s tenure at Florida. He was too stubborn to release his longtime friends when they clearly weren’t working out. I’d bet it caused a lot of friction with the AD as the continued issues became more apparent.
he certainly proved he wasn't up to being a gm during his stint in the nfl, but the two years before he got there and this year also prove sf is a dumpster fire of an organization.
Absolutely not, I was close this morning with the Friday sale, but now I am so happy I didn’t. This latest saga show that just like in most situations there really aren’t very many that know anything.
Agree to disagree. A young coach like Campbell putting together a good staff is near the very bottom of any concerns I would have with him. The only stipulation I'd want the UAA to have in place, is a one or two proven elite South Florida recruiters on staff at position spots. I'd sacrifice a bit on coaching talent at a couple spots, if it meant you had the pipeline in tact.
Just for fun I'm going to take the opposite tack. I think Kelly has a giant ego and he stands a good chance of getting that ego crushed in the SEC. He knows that he can go to UCLA and win the PAC 12 with only USC possibly standing in his way. A 12-0 UCLA is going to be in the playoffs. His ego gets stroked at UCLA. At Florida he could wind up as Saban's bitch. That would kill a guy like CK.
Yeah, coaching circles get tight. Seems most head coaches like to insulate as much as possible, so they tend to stick with those that have been by their side on the ride up. Great if you winning at a major clip. But if you are not in the hunt for titles, then I think you should always be willing to try new assistants out at all spots, if their part of the team is not firing off at an elite level. Mac definitely got bit by that, but there are many other coaches who are similarly stubborn.
@tilly At first I was all in for Frost but after this thread all I wanted to as Kelly. Now I will be disappointed with anyone other than Kelly. I still think and hope something will turn and Kelly will sign.
So your question is answered... Tilly wasnt trying to coerce you to by a premium membership, because you didn't. No gun was held to your head regardless of what you decided. Crisis avoided.
TBH it wouldn't have made any sense for this to be done a week or two ago. Why would Chip agree to UF without hearing any other offers? Even if he wants to coach here, had no interest anywhere else, he still should be doing exactly what he is doing from a negotiating standpoint.
