You don't take that kind of clout up there just to say oh, hello, nice to meet you and were just here to bs. They know that several jobs are about to come open and the only way you don't lose him to another big school is to get him on board asap. Now, if it is his choice to go elsewhere then so be it, on to the next option. Bottom line is they have several good choices and then some ok choices, and SS and co know they have to make a very good decision here.
