If you're incapable of understanding the analog being drawn here there's nothing any of us can do to help you. God have mercy on your soul.
It’s ok to be impressed, relatively speaking, by what Mullen has done/is doing at Miss St and still not believe he’s the guy for Florida. What he’s done there compared to their traditional baseline is amazing. Is he my top choice or even second choice for us? No because there’s bigger fish this cycle. But if we end up not catching those fish and go with Mullen, I will definitely get behind and support him and I’ll actually have faith he can get the job done. It does surprise me that anyone could unbiasedly look at Mullen’s results at MSU compared to their history and not be impressed by it.
Exactly. I want Chip Kelly or Scott Frost. If we get neither, Mullen is worth considering. I think he's equally as strong of a candidate as Taggart. I might give Taggart a slight edge if he can promise a better staff. I'd prefer Mullen to Strong.
Right. Neither program is a sleeping giant. No offense to either school but they have had good coaches.
We’re not so different, you and I. Kelly/Frost at the top for me followed by Mullen/Taggart. Slight edge to Mullen since he’s actually coached at Florida and also has the HC SEC experience. And remember, I’m a USF guy as well that loves Taggart so that tells you how objectively I’m looking at this. Strong is not on my list. A few years ago, sure. But I believe our offense and program needs a much stronger boost that he can provide. I’m a huge fan but I just don’t think he fits us right now. I’d be disappointed if we go that way but would still get behind my coach because that’s what Gators do.
Bucs here...sadly. Rest I'm with you. Magic are just...God. I did however get to go to quite a few games during the peak of the Howard era. Was there for the ridiculous Cleveland game where Lewis hit the three right at the buzzer after James hit an incredible three. Holy shit.........it was deafening. My seats were so bad I could touch the ceiling literally lol
So are you being literal or figurative? There are many who have posted on this thread their dislike for the choice of DM. I was simply trying to point out the fallacy of many who assume a drastic improvement in our record in short order. I also fear we will overpay for that opportunit a hallmark of several of our last hires. Sadly, I don't want to be right because more joy will be extinguished if we continue to underperform. But using knowledge guided by experience says Mullen may make us better but he isn't the answer and then where will be? FTR I don't believe there is a can't miss hire out there there is risk with every coach. I believe you try to minimize the risk of unmet expectations.
21 said: ↑ BenTrill and Tilly what are ya'll confidence level of us getting Chip on a scale of 1-10? Tilly, what if it's not Kelly? On a scale of 1 - 10 what's the chance that Mullen gets the job? Edit: to be clear, I'm not rooting for this outcome. If it's not Kelly I'd hope it's Frost but I'm curious to know Tilly's and BenTrill's guess at the probability that it ends up being Mullen if it's not Kelly.
Well, I'm containing my crazy right now. I'm not delving into unrealistic options. I'm a big Hugh Freeze fan, but I know there is zero chance that happens. I also am intrigued by Matt Campbell, but I don't know nearly enough about him. And, personally, I've always liked Les Miles, but he's not the type of "fun" that Scout Stiffman alluded to in his comments.
Jedd Fisch is a terrific coach. UCLA might hire him if Chip Kelly doesn’t work out. Plus Fisch is a Florida alum.
I'm sorry but I'm not at all impressed with what Mullen has done at Miss St. I didn't know that taking a terrible program and turning it into a decent one was impressive. He's got a losing record in conference, he's got the worse record in the history against top 25, and yes he's at Miss St but great coaches find a way to win big games sometimes Mullen has only done it 6 times and failed 32 times. He's not a winner and never will be. I feel very comfortable saying he will never win a title as a HC
Yeah I’d be severely disapponted if Freeze’s name even came up as a candidate, for the obvious reasons. I’m the same on Campbell. He’s making noise and it’s at Iowa State but his name has only JUST hit the radar on a national level. He may very well be a superstar in the making but it’s just too early to tell. Pretty sure the fan base would riot and destroy the new Publix if we went after Miles. And from what I’ve heard, it’s a pretty nice Publix.
No UF is a better school. I'm saying he has a history of beating lesser teams regularly. And losing to teams with more talent and the one year he built his team the Dak lead team that started 9-0 finished 10-3. I want our next coach to be successful. Think of it this way if you are going to pay 5-6 mil for Mullen or more are you confident he will deliver consistent 10 win regular seasons? And do that starting 2019? If not, then let's look for a guy that will deliver the same performance you expect of Mullen. Because it appears the bail out for some of those with differing opinions than mine believe if DM leaves us in better shape than it was worth it. Many coaches could come to Florida and leave us in better shape than we presently are. Those are the guys I'd vet On last question, would you rather have DM on our sideline or coach/play against his team's?
I don't care about what a coach does in his free time as long as he wins, and I think every coach and decent program are cheating, so the NCAA infractions don't bother me. Ultimately, I want a winner. But yea, it'll never happen. FSU plays UF and Miami every year. We don't play Miami often. That's literally what landed James Franklin the Penn State job. It's what landed Jim Harbaugh a job in the NFL. It's what landed Justin Fuente the Virginia Tech job. That's one thing that just about everyone in college football thinks is impressive. And Mullen did that in the SEC West.
I follow most of your reasoning and can’t and won’t try to change your POV. I’m always highly skeptical of statements like “He’s not a winner and never will be”. That’s incredible hyperbole. By your measuring stick, maybe a winner is only a coach that wins national and conference titles. To Missippi State, a school that before Mullen struggled to even get bowl bids, the fact that he’s taken them to bowl games in every season but 1 (I think that’s accurate), to me that’s a winner. If he had the same records and results at Bama he would have been canned long ago. But he isn’t at Bama. He’s at Mississippi State. Their ceiling isn’t going to be as high as teams like Bama.
