Everyone said Saban would bolt Bama too... Unethical? Not exactly. Research his one specific issue. A LOT of people said Billy Donovan, Urban Meyer, Saban and so many others were "unethical". I've said this name MANY times in regards to possibly hiring Kelly, John Calipari. Cal has long pushed the limits and had TWO final fours stripped at different schools. However when he was hired at UK only thing that he needs to be successful is understand that at Kentucky you don't have to cheat. Same goes here with UF football, you don't have to cheat, just coach and win and players will flock to you. Kelly is a good enough coach to do just that.
Most of those are reaches at best. Kelly is the most sure thing of any candidate. Can you honestly give another hire that wouldn't have more questions or more significant questions about?
You're not the only one, but I just don't get it. Frost may have more upside, but Chip Kelly is as close to a sure thing hire available. He's a Cam Newton drive/natty away from being considered the third or fourth best coach in CFB behind Saban, Meyer, and possibly Dabo. I would be very concerned if one of our rivals hired him.
Hilarious to me that some rather have a guy that Charlie Strong than Chip Kelly. Nevermind we haven’t had an offense in a decade with project HC’s. I want what some of y’all are smokin
The only thing I would say about CK or anyone we hire is they had better pay close attention to defense and STs. Our next HC will save himself a lot of misery by actively recruiting defensive players.
Exactly. The "show cause" was likely only implemented because Kelly chose to take the blame, knowing he was going to the NFL. This is very similar to a situation Saban faced, but he threw his assistant under the bus and is perceived as being squeaky clean. Everyone ignorantly babbling about NCAA issues with Kelly should actually read about it. http://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/what-exactly-did-chip-kelly-do-warrant-ncaa-sanctions-not-much
I would counter with this: 1. He was still coaching at least. It's not like he has hasn't coached in a decade like Gruden. Pete Carroll was out of college football for nearly 20 years before he took the USC job and excelled. Plus 5 years isn't a huge time. The game hasn't changed much in that time and the NFL has never had as close of a style to college football as it has now. 2. Spurrier didn't like recruiting either. You can hire a great recruiting staff for him. Plus it is a lot easier to recruit at Florida compared to Oregon, where you have to fly all over the place to recruit. We mainly recruit just Florida and Georgia and then cherry pick nationally. 3. The NCAA stuff is overblown. The NCAA found that Chip was unaware of the violations. It wasn't like the Carroll situation at USC. 4. Football is Chip's passion. He loves it. I don't think his edge will ever dull. If we used that logic Alabama should have never hired Saban who was 57. Chip is 53. Yes our 2 best hires were young up and comers, but we aren't serial killers here. We don't need a modus operandi. Just hire the best coach like Bama did with Saban. 5. Kelly was the OC 2 years prior to becoming head coach at Oregon. Chip is the one that transformed that offense and had 4 elite seasons in the 4 seasons he was HC. It was the equivalent of Chris Petersen as OC at Boise before he became HC. Chip's level of success never dipped. Belloti went 36-15 in his last 4 seasons as HC with 0 pac 10 titles. Chip went 46-7 with 3 pac 10 titles. It was actually the opposite of a situation where a bad coach takes over a good situation and crashes it like Coker at Miami and Helfrich at Oregon. 6. Meyer had no ties either. You can hire assistants that do. Plus his big name resonates with recruits and high school coaches.
It is pretty funny. We have a new guy in charge and thankfully he has a new mindset about hiring coaches.
Our fan's wanting to take a gamble again is funny.... I want us to hire the safest bet possible.... BTW I know that no coach is a guarantee to succeed
I'm definitely going on every single post with a "I told you so" after this announced tonight or tomorrow.
