Maybe a fun idea for you. As you go on sabbatical, perhaps you could start one last thread in Alligator Alley that's only about fishing. Sure it's not an official UF sport but you could make it your own. Then whenever you want to report a great day on the water, you can drop us a line every once in awhile and everyone would have a place setter to keep in touch. Figured I'd throw my line out there to see if you would nibble. Who knows, maybe over time if it grows, GC will name a link after you. Here's a few ideas...

I stayed at a hotel recently that had what appeared to be 1930's old style rotary phones. I was intrigued so I picked up and dialed the front desk. They had been updated to produce the same tone if you dialed a specific number as would be generated if you pushed a button. If you recall, the old method of automatic switching was by using a series of clicks for the number dialed.

 

Sorry to see you go Brent but I have a feeling you'll be back occasionally once the season starts. These Gator Boys have a way of affecting you like Pacino in Godfather 3, "just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!"

I have family that homesteaded in the way up north of Wisconsin in IIRC the 1880's or 90's. One of the last areas to get homesteaded in the contiguous 48. Back in the late 1960's they didn't have direct dial. You had to call the operator and get patched in. I visited once in the early 1980's and they didn't have touch tone but the old rotary dial clicks. At least they had direct dial then.

I was up there recently for a family funeral and saw a locally owned video rental store. Just like the beloved Video Rodeo in Gainesville used to be. I should have gone in to see if they still had VHS tapes.

 

I turn 60 on Tuesday. Is that old enough?

 

Back in my grad school days at Illinois I taught classes, mostly fluid mechanics. I had LOTS of guys on the GI bill in my classes. When I was an undergrad my older brother went to college (first at a local JUCO to rehabilitate his awful early college grades and then at Illinois to study Electrical Engineering) on the GI bill. I tutored him some in calculus.

A lot of those guys saw some crazy stuff and I suspect they had VERY tight sphincters.

As for me the only lottery I ever won was the draft lottery. I was something in the 300's.
