When were we the good guys? When the US stupidly helped start WW2? When the US started the war in Iraq? The US supported Al Qaeda and ISIS in the Libyan and Syrian wars it started. The US dragged Ukraine into war with Russia. Supporting Ukraine simply meant massive death tolls and greater Russian annexations of Ukrainian territory. Prolonging the slaughter isn't being "one of the good guys."
So you're saying that the "massive death tolls" could have been avoided if only Ukraine capitulated upfront and agreed to reincorporation into the new Russian empire ending its existence as an independent country or at a minimum agreed to become a Russian client state like Belarus, independent in name only? Trumpian politics will have far-lasting, negative impacts. While we used to be the hallmark of stability and predictability, we are seen globally as an unreliable ally, and a short-sighted enemy, respectively, throughout the world. It will take long years to recover our reputation.
If we did that, we would lose any positive control on the situation that we currently have. So what happens if the US pulls back our radar and air defense capabilities and then Russia accidentally shoots down a Polish aircraft near the border and Poland invokes Article 5? Do we allow Poland to pull us into a NATO war with Russia? Also, NATO cannot do what the US is doing with Security Assistance Group Ukraine. They do not have the ability, expertise, or the infrastructure. Saying the US needs to "butt out" is essentially saying it is OK to cut off the logistical support to Ukraine.
