Well, we would have to go along with the fiction that Christmas is strictly a religious holiday and not also a secular national holiday.
It actually does bother me, even if it shouldn’t, especially since I’m not even “really” Jewish. I’m more Christian really, with a very mixed religious heritage. But my niece is Jewish and in UF law, where the school was basically on lock down last week because one of the law students said all Jews should die. So this isn’t an abstract right now, even at UF. And there wasn’t even a warning needed on that Den thread, Christians can be trusted I guess. But not trusted when discussing other religions, so the answer was to relegate the religion, not deal with the idiots. It’s a symptom of a larger societal problem. There’s a great quote in the DaVinci Code from Sophie, “We are who we protect, who we stand up for”. If the site chooses to stand up for Christians and not others, maybe it’s not the place for me. And that goes beyond religion, making one of the biggest partisans here a mod said a lot too about who and what mattered to the leadership. Something for me to think about in a few months when my renewal comes up I guess.
The reality is that Christmas is almost as much a secular celebration of retail is it is celebration of the birth of Jesus.
@g8rbill can disagree, but you are speaking to the reality of the situation, not the Christian ideal.
So long as it's not a made-up religion by some dude in prison, I can totally agree with this sentiment.
As Oklahoma states above, he explained his thinking at the time while also stating that he would approach a similar post differently in the future. IMO, the matter was closed then. Not sure why the need to resurrect the thread. Wait a minute, maybe "resurrect" isn't the best word, at least not today . . . . Wishing all a joyous holiday.
