Has nothing to do with his expanded role on the team. He would be starting day one next year. No questions. This is all about NIL cash, which teams are throwing around like water right now.
Can’t know if it hurts next years team…..until we see who’s on next years team. I will continue to believe Golden has a detailed and specific plan…..he’s proven that to us in spades.
I can tell you this was not part of the plan, unfortunately. Hoping against hope that the market dries up and we get him back in the fold.
Yeah but... from what I've seen, Lee is a better player than Aberdeen. Still, there were two other starting guard positions available. Or one, if Haugh slides to the 3.
He was never going to be the starting point guard and knew we were bringing other kids in. He was actively recruiting Lee. That wasn't the issue.
certainly not part of the plan. Sadly, I don’t think there’s any chance of the market drying up. And I suspect he will command a very sizable NIL payment. And so to that end… I can’t blame him. But, short of a GatorCountry GoFundMe… I don’t see this reversing.
That's what Neil is saying, and others that I've heard. But we haven't seen the portal top out yet. And it's hard to say what he can get elsewhere. I know the staff loves the kid and haven't heard a negative thing about him on or off the court since he has been here. Lots of questions, though, because we've never had a situation quite this escalated in the portal financially.
Don't agree with the sentiments here. He's a Gator until he's not. And even then, he was a serious contributor to a national championship winning team. Nobody can take that away. I think it's actually pretty garbage to even question the decision tbh. Who on this forum would not take a $500k or more raise for doing the same job? What does he "owe" UF? Give me a break
This is life changing money we're talking about now. As much as I hate all of this, I can't blame the kids for striking while the iron is hot.
We played 3 shooting guards this season, why not 3 point guards next season? Our offense showed me that we are good with basically having guards who can spot up and also get in the lane and pass or finish. So basically I assumed Aberdeen would start with Lee, and we could shuffle between a big lineup with Haugh at the 3 and a small lineup with Urban at the 3. And of course mix in anyone who can play. Alexis might have gotten big playing time esp if both Ruben and Condon go pro. Oh wait if this is all about NIL money, then nevermind.
Exactly. If someone offered me 1 million to transfer from Florida to Florida State or Georgia as a senior, I would have taken it, haha. It's the game, not the player right now. And it's happening to everyone, everywhere.
I do. They are giving up possibly a much bigger payday for a smaller one right now. They have Walter as a perfect role model and are doing the exact opposite. Aberdeen has seen his former high school teammate take this route and it has not worked out for him. It is totally on them if they make this decision over NIL.
Lee isn’t going to play D like Denzel even if his game translates to the SEC. Denzel was a bucket getter when we needed it too. This sucks no matter what.
Ooof, don't know if I could make those moves. If they were offering that kind of loot, surely somewhere else would have something close enough. lol
Most of these guys are not going to make millions in the pros. This is their chance. If we're talking about 10-20k, even 100k, yeah, I agree with you. I'd like to see some loyalty. When we're talking about offers that are potentially better by a million or more, that's life changing money. I would hope he's giving FL a chance to match, but that's about the most I could ask of him. Walter was a transfer and well compensated. Kugel, I don't really know if it was ever all about the money with him. I always felt like he was just trying to find a place where he fits in.
