You ought to consider @Crusher post you cited as an example of offering information without an ad hominem accusation of (insert pejorative here).

I haven't seen a single post on this thread that is racist, but if you really want to debate racism, I invite you to toddle on over to THFSG. Stay there please.

If you show any 'Noles disrespect, you run the risk of them putting a bit of smashed cockroach in your Big Mac's secret sauce. I would be cautious if I were you.

That is unless you and your family doesn't eat fast food. Then, fire away!

I would say, not in coaching style, he is a junior version of Cal, doing far less with his acquired talent than someone who is better.

Not to hijack your excellent take, I would just say that today's prestigious universities focus almost exclusively on students who excel at one or possibly two concepts. Generalists should be running the country/world but we have incrementally valued the specialist over the general practitioner. I won't go all conspiratorial, just that we think and move incrementally rather than stop to see where we came from, what we aspire to be, and what direction we are actually going in order to make strategic changes. It is what it is.

There are two large differences between my youth and what is transpiring today. The professional team's fans (major leagues) are filled with wealthy folk or corporate types who can write off the tickets as a marketing expense (besides China and some silly fervor it has, this IS what keeps the NBA going all silly in player income) and that the students are mainly indifferent to sports passion, as a whole. About the best thing I can say about UF is that there are enough passionate students out there to handle the number of tickets distributed. It is nice to have a large enough population to do that.

I can think of four international students (two starters) on the basketball team and one starter on the baseball team.

I don't know about the other sports but at one time we had LOTS of international students on our swimming team.

I like @wingtee. And I know that his heart is in the right place for what he believes.

But maybe he should realize that the rise of UF as an academic institution pretty much parallels their rise in athletics.

Could most guys that played baseball at UF in the 1970's make the current team? Okay maybe not this year's team but recent teams?

Same thing with getting admission as a student.

    The bar has been raised.

You might think that is a bad thing but both athletics and academics were tasked with that and both delivered.

I know that lots of tears were shed when the child of mom and dad Gators didn't get admission with pretty good credentials.

I hate to admit it but FSU is actually a decent school. So are a number of other state schools like Florida Atlantic, USF and UCF.

Not going to say anything about New College lest it gets relegated to Too Hot.

I know the bar has been raised. I came up in an era of state universities were there to serve the kids from our state . Kids being gators at birth and now denied admission. I can’t grasp it Lurk. That money that has been given to UF will come to a stop and go to other schools.
The kids will adjust I’m sure but will this eventually hurt the workforce in the state?

Keep in mind, wing, that the FL population in 1980 was under 10mil. It's now 23.4mil.

So does the University serve the corporate interests of the state or the citizens of the state?

I kind of like the guy. FSU hasn’t been much of a basketball program but he does pretty well against tough competition most years and he’s a good dude.

    Observations:
    1) I wish this thread was titled differently
    2) The exchange of views here is informed and courteous.
    3) The antagonist was dealt with quickly and firmly and saw he’d get nowhere with his nonsense
    4) This is why I enjoy this board.

Which instrument, or are they a vocalist? If they will be an undergraduate student, it can be a bumpy but rewarding ride. The competition is crazy. The music scene, though, is like a mini NYC and there are plenty of performing ops in Denton and esp. with the Dallas/Ft Worth metro so close.
