Count me as one behind this guy. Why is this the only lever the dems have found to pull?

'Gum up the works': Senator singlehandedly halting confirmation of over 300 Trump nominees

Hundreds of President Donald Trump's nominees for high-level positions throughout the federal government have run into a brick wall, and the lone senator behind it has no plan to relent any time soon.

During an interview with CNN host Jake Tapper, Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), who is a member of both the Senate Appropriations and Foreign Relations Committees, delved into why he was expanding his hold to include more than 300 of Trump's nominees along with several critical pieces of bipartisan legislation. The Hawaii senator explained that his hold — which he is doing by denying "unanimous consent" (the process by which the Senate conducts official business) — is meant to apply "leverage" to both the administration and the Republican majority.

"I cannot grant them unanimous consent ... I'm just objecting to that. If they want any of these nominees or these bills to receive a vote, they have to schedule the vote. But this will slow them down," Schatz said. "And this is designed to lay down a marker both about the lawlessness of the Trump administration, but also about the fact that Donald Trump himself is destroying the American economy on purpose."
    ..............................................................
"Part of what it means to do a hold is that sometimes you're going to block things that you would otherwise allow to happen. And that's the case for these ... but we have to generate some leverage," Schatz responded. "And so until Secretary [Marco] Rubio comes to the committee and testifies about what they're doing in terms of illegally eviscerating United States aid, I'm not going to allow those even those bipartisan bills to move forward ... We have to be willing to stand up to these folks and gum up the works, even if it's politically uncomfortable to block a bill that you would otherwise be for."

finally. those other colleges with monster endowments need to use them to weather the lawsuits until they win and get paid. Thye need to present a unified front and stand up to the tyrant

Harvard Says It Will Fight Trump Administration Demands

Harvard University said Monday it will resist the Trump administration’s demands to change its governance structure to stop antisemitism on campus, saying the government is overstepping its authority.

The response is likely to set up a fight between the nation’s wealthiest university and the federal government, which has threatened to withhold nearly $9 billion in grants and contracts to the school and its affiliated hospitals.

The University will not negotiate over its independence or its constitutional rights,” Harvard President Alan Garber said in a letter to the school’s community.

Harvard’s response is the most significant pushback against the government since it began making demands on universities earlier this year.

    Cheers for Harvard.

Boo for UF and any other quislings.

There's only one way to treat a (criminal) bully. Stand up to them. Everyone should be standing up to them, so when they illegally attack all universities, their vile criminality is on full display.

At least someone in this country still has some testicular fortitude when it comes to dealing with un-American, criminal bullies.

My understanding on these grants, maybe not all, but most are in the annual budget from Congress. Going forward, these universities might not get anything to start with, much less get taken back.

It would probably be wiser for the universities to play the long game if they want something in the future.

That could happen even if they made some kind of deal, especially with a guy famous for not paying people after the fact.

Remember when the right used to claim to care about freedom of speech? They sure went to "suppress speech that the government doesn't like or people not giving the speech can't research cancer" pretty quickly, huh?

Universities are required to parrot the unconstitutional Trumpy line on free speech, and culture wars.

And if they don't, the criminal Trump Administration will yank their funding.

The only surprising part is not the vile, un-American criminality of the Trump Administration .... it's that anyone at all in this country would support this nonsense.

    But here we are.

sound like chamberlain. what makes you think maga is going to win in the long run?

these legal cases are easy to win. just have to have the pockets to weather the storm until then.

the independence of our colleges and universities to be free from political influence isn't something to be negotiated away.

continually disappointed in those willing to continue to placate the ego of the narcissist.

how do you feel about him ignoring the supreme court 9 - 0 order?

NJ Governor now under investigation for daring to oppose

Alina Habba investigating N.J. for refusal to help ICE. ‘Anyone who gets in our way will be charged.’ - nj.com

The new interim U.S. attorney for New Jersey said her office is investigating Gov. Phil Murphy and state Attorney General Matthew Platkin for what she sees as their refusal to assist immigration officials attempting to detain people in the country illegally.

Alina Habba, the state’s top federal prosecutor, issued the stern warning during an appearance Thursday night on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show.

“I have instructed my office today to open an investigation into Governor Murphy, to open an investigation into Attorney General Platkin, who also instructed the state police not to assist any of our federal agencies that are under my directions,” Habba said.

on state schools that can’t afford to fight back I agree, on huge privates like Harvard with gargantuan endowments I’d say fight all you want. Liberals will make them whole again when this embarrassment is over.

I'm not 100% sure who it was from, but I saw a lot of Trump cheerleading when the USSC ruled in Trump's favor.

I'm sure those same people -stalwarts of jurisprudence and hearty backers of the USSC- are going to fully voice their disapproval of the criminal Trump ignoring the legal institution they so cherish.

I mean, it's not like they just support Trump no matter what, and him breaking whatever laws he chooses to. Right?

    Right?

I distinctly remember so-called “free speech absolutists” forcing a bunch of neo-Nazi’s onto college campuses. Such principles!

I guess it wasn’t so much about the free speech or constitutional principles after all, it was… exactly what we thought it was. I’m shocked by this turnabout. Shocked I tells ya.

why, do you think free speech is no longer protected under the constitution?
