Trump continues to rug pull his own supporters. After spending a week talking about bringing back all those great robot repair jobs with the wonderful and not at all inflationary tariffs, they now exempt phones from the tariffs.

Was going to post the same. Is anyone really surprised although I think Trump was motivated as much by a desire not to alienate potential purchasers of smart phones and computers as he was by placating Tim Cook.

Don't screw with your voting base's cell phone prices.

Agree although capitulating to the tech bros especially Tim Cook and not alienating voters who purchase the devices are not mutually exclusive. What Trump did was the equivalent of killing two birds with one stone.

It should be noted that with the components still being charged at well over 100% tariff, this will kill all domestic electronics manufacturing. Assemble overseas: 0% tariff on anything. Assemble here: more than double your component costs (then pay more for labor, real estate, and capital inputs).

Can’t blame you there. Apple lost its innovation when Steve Jobs passed and honestly they haven’t made a groundbreaking device since the iPhone X. Once my current device is paid off I’m seriously thinking of switching to a Pixel. Best in class picture taking and AI abilities that are far beyond that of Apple’s.

I thought I saw something today that Pres. Trump has taken the tariffs off Chinese produced smart phones. I wonder if that's because he realizes the $3500 American made phone is a political disaster for him or whether it's a move that he's making after getting some concession from Apple and perhaps others to build cheaper/better phone in the USA in the future.

He has, but not on the component parts. Which means that nobody will assemble consumer electronics in the US if they can avoid it. You can either ship the completed product without tariffs or the component parts with excessive tariffs to assemble here.

The best smartphone on the market currently IMO if you don’t care about stuff like gaming and use it for actual “smart” capabilities. Its AI is best in game and it also has the best camera. Once my iPhone is paid off I’ll be switching over.
