I think the people that would prefer for the players not to go are projecting their politics onto the players and missing the unique opportunity that is presented for each of the players (and other members of the team as well). It's an experience that is far more likely to enhance their lives than it is something that would inhibit their lives. Even if it's just a nothing burger (no pun intended), it's better to have gone and not been impressed than to not go and wonder what you missed. I would think this board more than others we would be encouraged by the opportunity to put ourselves in front of people that might not think like us. I just don't see the downside to such a thing other than attempting to score political points for somebody else. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
Wonderfully said. These posters see politics in everything and it's a far bigger reason that the country is fracturing than Trump. They can't let the politics go for even a second. They want these players to miss out on a once in a lifetime opportunity just to make a political statement on their behalf. Newsflash, Trump isn't going to care if a player doesn't show up. But that player might care when the Gator NIL collective decides to not pay them, because a lot of Gator fans, including many who contribute to NIL, are Republicans and voted from Trump. Only the players and Gator basketball would be hurt by not going to the White House. Trump could care less.
You have to be reminded every day that the candidate I supported won both the Electoral College (by a landslide) and the popular vote. Meanwhile you supported an absolute loser candidate. But no surprise that losers support other losers. Owning you all and winning every day never gets old.
You act like sports teams have never declined WH invitations. Amongst individual players, the Warriors and Eagles have declined invitations.
I don't care who has previously declined to go (don't really care if our team goes or not); my point was specifically about those who would "prefer" for our basketball team not go. There was (possibly still is) a thread on NBN about this, and one poster's complaint amounted to: Poster: "I prefer for them not to go" Most people on the thread: "Why?" Poster: "I just don't think you should hold it against somebody who decides not to go" What? Nobody ever suggested they'd hold it against a player (or staff or whomever) if they didn't go. Where did that part even come from? The sentiment was liked/agreed with by folks who post here, so I was hoping they could elaborate more on what exactly the preference would be based on. how would you feel if you were chen and your visa could be revoked (like those of your countrymen) and you could get snatched up and deported with no hearing for something as simple as an expired drivers license? Is getting the experience more important than standing up for the principle when your teammate is personally impacted? which one would teach the players a better life lesson? accept it so that you can profit from it or oppose it because it is so wrong?
kind of like the players that don't join the prayer circle or make it to the worship sessions regularly? holding it against someone is a very subjective and hard to define issue when it comes to playing time or determining if they fit the team "culture".
Agree with your first sentence and everything after the 2nd sentence. I don't necessarily disagree with the 2nd sentence, but it qualifies as an assumption imo and fails to account for the power to protest. I'm not talking about the right to protest, but the fact that some Gator hoops players might benefit from their principled decision not to visit the WH.
I don’t care if they go, but I really don’t see a problem with having a negative opinion of attending and expressing said opinion. It’s no less valid than your pro-attendance opinion.
I appreciate the sentiment, and it's worth pointing out that if such a thing came up and that's what they did, then we would/should all respect that, of course. But that's not the question being asked. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
This is the second time you've quoted me with comments that have nothing to do with what I've written. It's not about whose opinion is more valuable (where does that even come from?), just trying to understand the "why" of it. Clearly there's a desire there that isn't being fully expressed. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
Respectfully, that's not what happened. We're talking about a team that has decided to go, and an individual expressing that they prefer that they not go. So that removes the "principled decision not to visit" from the equation (which still could potentially happen in the future but has not happened to date). Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
No, but I did see that about 200 Nigerians were being deported. I honestly don't know anything about it more than that. Is Chen concerned about Nigerians being deported? Should he be? Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
You’re just another sycophant who continues to support a deranged president who is causing harm all over the globe. By the way, five children and three adults who contracted cholera in South Sudan needed to walk for three hours in blazing heat to try to get healthcare because the local healthcare facilities were forced to shut their doors because of the elimination of US aid. All 8 died. I don’t have a problem with people like you having voted for Trump. But, now that you see what has happened, you should be as opposed to his policies as pretty much everyone else. This is not republican versus democrat or right versus left, this is trying to do what’s in the best interest of this country and the world.
Should anyone be worried about their visas being revoked and deported at the drop of a hat or the whims of an impetuous angry old man? That answer would be no. But today the administration told the Supreme Court to stuff their 9-0 decision, the person the court ordered returned to the US was staying in El Salvador and the administration was not going to follow the court order. A big FU to the Supreme Court. A 9 - 0 Supreme decision. So what should be and what is aren't co-existing right now. Any person without US citizenship is fair game if they dare oppose. Is the perpetrator of that constitutional crisis, one that led J6 and then set them free, be someone our players should emulate or respect? Link to administration snub in different thread.
Seems like this s/b an individual choice to go or not go. I'm guessing most, if not all, will go and both trump and Rubio will have self serving political comments at some point.
It has become nothing more than a circle jerk for a few on the left. The forum is just sad these days. I will always keep an eye in hope good discussion can happen. I am not optimistic. This really was a good forum. Not anymore.
