It's sad and it may not be pretty if governor stands up to Trump the residents of that governor's state could unnecessarily suffer because the Dear Leader's fragile ego was damaged . A prime example is what Trump is doing to Maine over the really trivial issue of whether transgender athletes should be allowed to participate in women's sports. Maine's governor stood up to Trump and residents of her state experiencing the negative impact. Here’s a running list of all the probes, funding cuts since Trump threatened Maine Whitmer realizes that she's dealing with a malignant narcissist and that if she doesn't at least appear to kiss his ass the impact on Michiganders could be disastrous.
It doesn’t bother me per se - the only thing that does bother me is her endorsing any version of these tariffs. The point is this routinely happens for governors who don’t have lots of national media exposure. They don’t have the experience of navigating such situations. There are plenty of Republican examples - Ron Desantis, Scott Walker, Rick Perry - they were all darling party potential candidates based upon what people projected upon them as governor. But once they got onto a national stage they weren’t up to the task. That’s not to say all governors are that way, but it’s hurdle number one you have to get over. I think last year she did some stupid social media meme or stunt - it was harmless but it was easy fodder for opposition to misconstrue which then required an apology. That’s one thing about Gavin Newsom. He does have a national presence and has taken his lumps and hits in the national media. I’m not a super big fan, but he is closer to the big leagues. The same is true for Buttigieg - he went through a presidential campaign and has worked in DC. He’s less likely to make unforced errors.

She chose to do her job and serve her state now over her own political ambitions unlike a couple of other governors who are selling out (and lying) to move up. Good for her.

That’s not a fair snipe at Witmer. She didn’t pull herself out of the race (that she’s not even yet entered). This was OP’s narrative and a single line in the article by the author saying some people feared her chances were harmed as a result. “Democrats said she had been “played” by the Trump administration, with others casting doubts over her chances now of winning the Democratic nomination in 2028.”
Still think she will be a good candidate. Assuming that she will decide to run her recent visit with Trump will be long forgotten when the campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination begins over two years from now. Keep in mind that four years ago the conventional wisdom was that Trump wouldn't even make another run for the presidency much less even win the Republican nomination and the general election.
Should be a lesson for any centrist-style candidate that holding rallies is a better use of your time than visiting the WH for any reason.
