Chins has an NBA-type ceiling. He's got that much raw ability and athleticism, but he comes from a background of far less experience in organized basketball than most American players. He's getting there, though. He's gradually improved over the season and will be even better next season. Same with Condo, who's ahead of Chins but has more work to do before he's NBA-ready. A little more muscle, and a lot of work at developing a soft touch and finishing at the hoop, and making the freebies. But he's come a long way during his two Gator seasons. Condo and Haugh need to organize a big fishing trip for the whole team right after the season. To celebrate our third national title.
Have no idea what actual adjustments Golden called for with that very last timeout (I assume it was to do something about their easy buckets in the paint). Watching that final stretch, if Golden wanted to start fouling right away I doubt he wanted to go after the 84% shooter. Not sure he wanted to give the wide-open 3 when *up* 3 either, our D was actually confused there about who was guarding who! Although Chinyelu grabbed that rebound, we were probably fortunate it was a jump ball instead of a foul. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. Don’t get me wrong, Haugh and Clayton hit those HUUUGE shots, but when you rewatch you realize TTU pretty much choked too.
Toppin I believe, he's a 67% FT shooter. Williams was a 84% FT shooter, I don't Golden actually wanted to foul him. If you watch the inbounds play after the timeout, it looks like they tried to give a foul to Toppin, refs let it go, then Haugh fouled Williams and pointed back to where they tried to foul Toppin like he was complaining they didn't get the foul back there.
Speaking of CTFG, I saw part of a 4-person panel yesterday from 2022 with 1 guy talking about how he was able to listen in to Golden's huddle in his NCAAt appearance while at USF and thought, "this guy gets it" and that sooner rather than later, he will the HC at a major university and will the whole thing within 6 years. We might actually have Billy Donovan on steroids, not just BD 2.0
Somewhere on here it was posted or it was in the post game that his % on the first FT was a lot lower which factored into it.
You may know this. But Golden fouled them on purpose early in the clock cycle to get more possessions. Great HC.
Agree. Tommy actually tried to foul Toppin immediately on the inbound pass coming out of the timeout. You can see him pointing to the spot and talking to someone out of the camera frame (a referee?). It was clearly the strategy discussed in the huddle.
If Chinyelu develops a left hand hook to go with his right hand hook, it will be almost impossible to guard him.
I have nothing to add that compares with the awesome GC community analysis in this thread. But I have watched a lot of bball from my armchair. And this is the only game I can remember where I actually rewound/paused/frame advanced the game to keep up with the coaching moves during the game. Golden is a machine.
