too funny Vance scout team went scouting to find a resident to host the Vance family. It was a universal hell no. this is how the world sees us, will not invite the VP of the US and his wife in. At least they could read that room and cancelled the visit. The real reason Trump’s Vance visit to Greenland was cancelled: “they’ve been going door-to-door” Usha Vance, wife of the U.S. Vice President, traveled to Greenland for a friendly public appearance during a celebrated dog-sled race. Instead, it became a diplomatic embarrassment, and not for the first time a Trump-aligned U.S. official has had plans in Greenland go sideways. Here’s JD talking about joining his wife. The official reason for cancelling the full visit has not been made public. But according to local reports out of Nuuk, the real story is more humiliating than the administration might have expected. TV 2 Denmark’s correspondent in Greenland, Jesper Steinmetz, reported that U.S. representatives had spent several days ahead of the visit going door-to-door in Nuuk – literally – asking residents if they’d be willing to host or welcome the vice president’s wife. Not one person said yes. It seems that the refusal wasn’t just symbolic – it was decisive. Plans changed, and Usha Vance’s public appearance, with her husband involved too, was pulled from the schedule. A social media post from user Viking Fella summed up the episode in more blunt terms: “They didn’t find a single person who would let her in. This is why the trip was really cancelled!”
I can't believe "Who wants to become a social outcast by selling out your country to the same people trying to colonize it?" wasn't a more attractive option for people.
I really, really, really wish this Greenland thing would just go away. I could absolutely be persuaded that adding Greenland to the team is in our national security interest and that it would be mutually beneficial. I could also see a plausible scenario in the future where Denmark and Greenland would agree. But for whatever reason they don’t want it right now, and the only message we should be sending is along the lines of “Totally understand. We have a good team, though, and we want you on it. Let us know if you reconsider.” There’s nothing more to say here. Even hinting that forcible annexation is possible (i.e. the “one way or another” language) only makes us look stupid. The Greenlanders only dig their heels in, like any free people would. And invasion is not a serious possibility. Who is the President going to get to do it?
This is not who Trump is. He blusters, makes vaguely threatening remarks, and cranks the relevant parties into the red zone to generate drama and attention. He is a profoundly shallow and weak person, who has been elevated to a position that he exults in as the biggest stage in the world.
Yeah, well, I don’t know what all of that will result in. I just know what it won’t result in: Greenland joining our republic.
Still a non-zero policy. If they are willing to occupy various government agencies illegally, why not send a military force to "occupy" Greenland illegally? Is Denmark going to shoot back? Probably not, and that would be their calculation, much like "what are the courts/Democrats going to do if we kidnap people and deport them?" Is a federal judge going to fly to El Salvador to release some poor Venezuelan? In the case of Greenland, who's going to intervene, the UN? What haven't they been willing to rip-up to this point?
The people who want to annex Greenland are those who probably don’t know/understand the Mercator projection.
I repeat, more emphatically this time, who is the President going to get to do it? On a totally unrelated note, my favorite part of The Right Stuff occurs at about the 1:20 mark of this clip.
How are they not on the team? No different than Canada. No reason for the US aggressive positions other than a bully is who he is
So the military is just going to defy an order from the "commander in chief?" All I've seen so far is a bunch of spineless people cave to Trump again and again, because its the easy thing to do. And your thinking is that the people who follow orders for a living are going to not? Or a chud like Hegseth is going to talk him out of it?
I understand what you mean, but there’s a difference between being part of an alliance and part of a country. And I certainly don’t have a problem with inviting them to be part of our country. I question the approach strongly.
Obviously. I asked you who the President would get to invade Greenland. You answered that you think the U.S. military would kill a bunch of unarmed Eskimos and steal their land without question, without a clear and present danger to the republic, and without statutory authorization from the Congress (which the President would never get even if he asked for it). You don’t think the President would face resignations, refusals, and passive resistance to the point that the whole enterprise becomes infeasible. That’s fine. I asked. You answered. I’m a serving officer. It would be totally unprofessional for me to state or imply that I or any other officer would rather go to prison than attack another democracy who means no harm to us or any other country. So, yeah, you’re not getting an answer out of me.
Why would they need to kill anyone? Who's shooting back? Or need to even say anything about stealing land? Invent a national security threat, send a force under that pretext, and voila, you've occupied the country. You dont need a big force to do it, because Greenland isnt a military theat. A couple of ranger battalions, a few ships offshore, hold an airfield ... Then the fun begins, the right-wing press just says its 'leverage,' they arent occupying the country etc. Are people in the streets here over it? Maybe some people would resign, but anyone with a career in mind ... what do they have to lose by complying? Anyone going to hold them accountable in the future? Probably not, we dont do that lol. Maybe they arent savvy enough to pull it off, but when the troops are there, how does it play out? Greenland just becomes "contested" and creates a new status quo until someone blinks. I'm not saying its a sure thing, but I cant dismiss it as easily as you can.
