Putin’s $88 million helicopters destroyed in strike ahead of Russia ceasefire talks

Ukraine struck deep behind enemy lines to wipe out four high-tech Russian helicopters on the eve of crucial ceasefire talks. These talks follow U.S.-Ukrainian negotiations on Sunday, with discussions focusing on a partial ceasefire to halt attacks on energy infrastructure. Kyiv’s military intelligence agency GUR said two Mi-8 helicopters and a pair of Ka-52s were destroyed overnight. Obviously, this time around, European countries would be expected to participate in funding the reconstruction of Ukraine, if not lead the way. Weak and ignorant leadership from the U.S. might preclude the U.S. participating in the effort. The U.S. reaped the benefits of re-building Europe after WWII, and we created conditions that have led to long-lasting peace in the region while accepting a position as the world's leading nation, with the global influence that goes with that. No doubt, the U.S. has made back the money invested in Europe many times over.

I'm not sure which is more tragic: the fact that Trump is too stupid to see the importance of having Russia (a marauding nation of barbarians) defeated, or the fact that Trump is too stupid to see the value in helping to re-build Ukraine without fleecing and gouging them at every turn. Trump's legacy as a president hinges on his ability to understand these two concepts and overcome his innate greed and short-sightedness. History will likely judge him an ignorant and dangerous fool if he fails.

 

Russia has been using a plot to discredit Ukraine in Austria, to reduce support for Ukraine in the war. Russian intelligence hired a Bulgarian to manage a disinformation campaign within Austria. The campaign included on-line propaganda as well as stickers and graffiti meant to look like extremist Ukrainians were defacing Austria.

UK intelligence assesses impact of Ukraine's most successful strike on Russia in 2025

The strike on the military base in Engels has been the most successful of 2025. Russia will not be able to use the airbase for missile strikes against Ukraine for some time, the UK Ministry of Defense informs.

According to the report, on the night of March 19–20, the Armed Forces of Ukraine struck an ammunition storage area located at the Russian Strategic Aviation airbase Engels-2 using a UAV. The base is located 600 km from the border and is used for attacks on Ukraine.

According to UK intelligence, a large number of aerial munitions used against Ukraine were in the impact zone, causing significant damage.

"The substantial loss will likely disrupt strike operations from the airfield in the short term, forcing Russia to improve its defensive posture and replenish munitions stocks," the report states.

glad they are effective at intercepting missiles but that seems like an awfully expensive way to stop incoming while not being able to deploy on offensive instead of defensive missions

With Western jets, Ukraine’s Air Force challenges Russian air advantage

The unnamed pilot describes how the different kinds of Western aircraft and ammunition are helping Ukraine to counter Russia’s long-standing advantage in the air.

“Now we have received a pretty good reinforcement in the form of French aircraft [Dassault Mirage 2000], and they help us a lot,” the pilot said. “You could say our aviation is finally reaching the desired level—the same level we saw when we trained abroad.”

“We now have a different, higher-quality arsenal. The Russians understand this. On some fronts, we’re engaging at very close range—something we haven’t seen before. Based on their actions, we see them starting to retreat; they’re afraid to get near us.”

“Our main focus now is on the Russians’ use of their guided bombs,” the pilot adds. “Not all directions are fully covered, but we are working to complete missions on those fronts. We know we can’t get close enough to destroy the launch platforms themselves, but integrated efforts are underway with electronic jamming, optimizing EW measures, and improving detection of the launch platforms and the guided bombs themselves.”
