and responsibility as a journalist? Journalism has received significant blowback in the past for items they might have downplayed. ie Early stages of Iraq war or bidens mental decline. Albeit this is a specific event, but newsworthy how our new potus admin is irresponsibly sharing sensitive info.

He’s not a hero in the sense he didn’t do anything extraordinary or risky to obtain this access. It quite literally fell into his lap (or into his phone).

Nevertheless you know damn well this guy is now a MAGA target. So even though he did nothing more or less than do his job, that is not without personal risk.

We do have chat applications and mobile devices capable of handling up to TS info outside of a SCIF.

Not based on Signal though. Signal meets a lot of good standards but it has quite a few security holes that would prevent it from ever being approved for IL6 or beyond.

    Right here
I read that the journalist thought the whole thing was some kind of scam and only realized it was real when the attack happened as described. He then left the group immediately.

Like many specialized professions (law, medicine, etc), journalism has a unique set of ethical standards (and, no, journalist ethics is not a contradiction in terms; my wife is a journalist ;)). Goldberg's actions may have been 100% consistent with the ethics of journalism. Speaking for self, though, I am not an advocate for journalism on this issue any more than I am an advocate for one political party or the other. I serve the country. In that capacity, assuming we have the whole story here, yes, it was in the country's interest for this Signal nonsense to stop, but it was also in the country's interest for several reasons, some of which I mentioned above, for the public to never have found out about this. I twice mentioned Ray Mabus as an example of reckless use of classified information that was not made public by journalists who learned of it (hopefully) because they understood it was not in the national interest or (more likely) there was just no appetite for embarrassing the Obama Administration. Just my take. It doesn't really matter now. It's out there.

we already go through yearly training. They need to make sure people understand the training they take.

we do but they aren't 'passed around like candy' but would expect some of the people on the call would have access to one.

I would be very surprised if every member of that chat did not have an aide with that technology on them. Hence, the metaphor I used earlier about learned people openly drinking canal water. Something is not adding up here, even if we go with the theory that all of these veterans are just stupid and arrogant.

Btw, Goldberg is in the crosshairs of the admin. I’ve heard at least 3 of trumps staff referring to Goldberg as “loser”, “scumbag”, etc. And trump is renowned for vindictiveness and he has the power of the US gov. Not to mention maga fans. We’ve heard of others who went against Trump and then started receiving threats, threats against their family, hiring security, etc. Right or wrong, Goldberg brought a lot blowback and embarrassment to Trump and his team.

is exposing that level of gross incompetence not good for national security?

without understanding the details of previous situations, it is hard to compare.

what isn't hard to compare is the ability/willingness/awareness to do anything about it if the whole world doesn't know. that makes shining light on it much more critical than if real adults were in charge. just the reality versus the theoretical equivalent.

We can certainly agree that stopping it is. Exposing it to the public is more situational. I'm not convinced, at this time, that exposing it was necessary to stopping it. But the day is young ...

do you have any faith in this admin to do anything without tremendous public pressure? even with it being exposed, they are doubling down and trying to do nothing other than tell us the yellow rain is vitamin enhanced rainwater safe to drink and expecting us to grab our mugs.

Funny you should ask. I was just pondering that. I actually think a couple members of this Administration, including some of the people on that chat, would be more amenable to making a positive change with a private dressing down than with a public shaming. Just my read of their character.

you are a more trusting soul than I. Rubio might generally care, like he does about Ukraine, but with the same effect. nobody will say anything to upset dear leader or make themselves a target of not being faithful enough

Under Trump there will never be leaks of classified information by his appointees since he can declassify everything with his mind and do so retroactively like he did with his stash of documents at Mar-a-Lago.

Acknowledge what? We call them mobile kits and my team is responsible for supporting the network infrastructure needed to enable to connect to our agencies networks. I only know who has these at my agency. Can’t speak to who else has them.
