As much as I'd love to think something like this was true, and maybe it is, but: This "story" is being brought back to life because Joe Rogan talked about it 3 days ago. It's a non-peer reviewed paper from 2022. Why JR picked it up now, I don't know. But one of the paper's co-authors is an Italian lad that has written some, let's say, interesting pieces on Aliens. How they want our souls and other oddities.
I was reading about this, earlier today. Pretty amazing if true but as you pointed out, there are some skeptics. Definitely something to follow …. and much more interesting than partisan politics.
The next logical conclusion has to be that Egypt should become the 52nd state and we take over the Suez Canal?

I've only looked into this story for about 15 minutes but it looks like the real experts are pretty skeptical. The average Joe's are more excited.
