We seemed to have whiffed big time getting decent hitters or even a pitcher for this years team. Don't know if it was bad evaluation, bad coaching or bad attitudes, either way this has the makings of a long year. One we haven't seen in a long time. Could we see Sully change his staff like he did several years ago? Jones - Stetson - UNKNOWN due to injury Nadeau - Jacksonville - Not an SEC starter Cyr - Miami - Average SEC player at best Donay - Va Tech/Lakeland - Can't hit quality pitching Boser - USF - Average Stripling - Texas Tech/GA Hs - Not SEC caliber Wilson - Charleston Southern - feel good story from last year but not SEC caliber Billy Barlow - Not a weekend guy Jenkins - Sante Fe CC - Not ready for SEC. Should have played another year at Sante Fe Shelton is the only one you could point to where we have had some success on this years roster.
Everybody wanted Cyr and Jones....Vols thought they had Cyr wrapped up. Boser was also a guy that was pretty desirable, ironically the concern was his defense. I thought Nadeau was viewed as a quality utility player, multi position/great role player. Don't think it was ever expected he would have to carry the load put on him. Stripling was likely viewed as a potential guy, has some tools and might develop. I've never been a fan of the Donay types, but coaches today flock to those power guys. Ultimately the crazy number of injuries for position players AND the poor play from so many has kind of forced too many guys into roles they are struggling with. Pitching I just don't know. Didn't like the two additions and thought we needed a weekend starter and maybe a closer....but everybody else wants that too and I'm not the one footing the bill. Curious if Sully feels our NIL is adequate, or if we overspent on a guy like Evans to get him back. UF's prime NIL source for all sports in Condron, and we know he is attuned to baseball
At what point can we question coaching? Let's be honest the years 2019, 2021, 2022 were disappointing and underwhelming. The regular season last year was a nightmare. If one credits Sully with last years post season run it's only fair to hold him accountable for the regular season. This season looks worse than last season.
I’ve heard lots of rumors over the past few years that no, Sully does not think our NIL is adequate, and Condron is tired of being the only guy who contributes. Gator Nation doesn’t like it when you critique their NIL participation (or lack thereof), though.
No season that gets you into the NCAA tourney is a nightmare, that is just patently ridiculous. And getting to Omaha makes it a great year.
I know Condron doesn't like NIL to begin with, and is tired of carrying the load, no question about that. Who could blame him?
I know. Cyr was top 25 guy. However others were on the outside, but certainly showed potential. I'm wondering what has happened to it. No plate disciple and frankly look worst now than they did from their previous team. Like you, I thought we missed big time on pitching. With that said, not much one can do if the NIL money isn't there. I don't know what that looks like for us, however it appears to be issue. Wake, TN, LSU and Texas schools have the money.
I’m not a fan of people who don’t contribute enough to lure a single player here bitching that someone else isn’t spending enough. If you want more money to be spent, spend more money. They are willing to take it and happy to spend it.
I am not wealthy and have other priorities for my discretionary spending, so don't contriubte any money to UF NIL. While I will continue to comment positively and negatively about how all of our Gator teams are performing and are being coached, I will try to remain silent about the quality of our additions in all sports via the portal. I know a few weeks ago, most of us were celebrating all the wins, commenting on what a deep roster the baseball team had and anticipating a very good SEC season. Injuries have sure contributed to our slide of late, but for whatever reason the performance hasn't been there either. I just hope they can get it together and start winning SEC games. Go Gators!
No doubt. I contribute where I can. I’m sure others on this board do as well. I suspect that that pool of money is a drop in the bucket compared to a Comdron et al. I’ve heard from numerous connected folks at UF that our NIL, across all sports, is middle of the pack. One UF admin told me recently that we don’t have as many mega-donors as the schools we want to compete with… but we really lag in the run-of-the-mil contributions across the fanbase. He cited ATM as an example, where they get dramatically more contribution from fans who report their income across the sub-$50/100/150/200k levels… as well as dramatically more mega-donors (oil money?) than our relative handful. Is what it is.
When you see how aggressive Coach Vit and Wes Johnson are kind of makes you wonder. Pitching wise knowing what we know with Copp’s injuries and lack of veteran lefties would have thought 3 proven pitchers at least in portal with 2 being lefties that would be immediate contributors. We got no lefties in portal. We got no thumpers at the plate. Baffled!!
Jones- Coppola- Menendez-who else? Still would not equate to pure domination 2 weeks in a row and last 3 were at home. Injuries contribute only a little. Those injuries don’t make us not hit fastballs. We are getting beat in the portal, especially pitching wise. Had to bring in 3 vets this year with 1 being plug and play and the other 2 being solid contributors. We didn’t do that
That's just pitching-Kurland too-I am sure there are others I am missing Shane-know you are a Gator-but you are way overboard with opponents praise-and many here do not want to hear that over and over-perhaps rethink that
We had one of the worst pitching staffs in the country last year and walked away from the transfer portal with Billy Barlow and a couple JUCO pitchers who struggled with command at that level. We had some bad luck with Michael Ross leaving in the draft, but that's a reality in college baseball that you have to plan for. I won't criticize the position player transfers, because I was excited for all of them and thought we had a really compelling lineup on paper going into the year. But we simply didn't do enough on the pitching side, and that was clear at the time. Again, we've had some injuries on the pitching staff, but desperately hoping that you'd get healthy, effective seasons from Peterson, Clemente and Coppola isn't much of a plan. I don't judge players for injuries (they're not a reflection on a player's toughness or character or whatever), but Pierce Coppola getting injured isn't bad luck -- he's been hurt more often than not at UF. And pitching being what it is, you have to expect guys like Peterson and Clemente are going to miss a turn or two in the rotation. It shouldn't put you in a place where you give up 32 runs over two games.
Kurland back and Vit deserves the praise as Nat champ coach. What West Johnson is doing at Georgia is impressive, considering they have not been a traditional baseball power. I see no problem with praising others when deserved.
