The NCAA/universities CAN regulate outside pay but they have to first recognize the players as employees (which SCOTUS has essentially recognized given the farcical structure the NCAA clung too for years so they could keep all the money) and then negotiate collective bargaining. It is a farce and I have no idea why people with no ownership stake would pay kids sooo much money, but, hell, it is their money. Unfortunately, not sure why the NCAA wouldn't support the continued payment of players from third parties while they keep the revenue - unless they actually believe in players playing for schools and a competitive landscape (hah!). It is pure business now (and has been for decades, the farcical structure just took a while to crumble).

That's fine with me, but they need to go back to the old transfer rules. This year after year of free agency is what is killing the game.

College basketball is as good as it has ever been; why will football be different? Gone are the days of hoarding talent like Alabama used to do. Pay will calm down after this crazy implementation period between the big schools and coaches that develop players will be the ones that have the competitive advantage

Poppycock. The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. The college football caste system will become even more pronounced.

You are spinning off on a tangent. A discussion of coaching salaries is fine, but it's not pertinent to this specific discussion of student athletes....nor is it a viable comparison since there really is no way to equate the value of a coach who runs a program( potentially for many years) to one of 85 scholarship athletes.

100% correct. You also cannot forget that the path to coaches earning that high dollar salary is not easy, pays peanuts in the beginning, and is based on your performance. Eventually becomes a meritocracy of W-L. Applying whataboutisms to college student athlete ‘earnings’ and college coaches’ salaries is dumb.

Players have the same rights as coaches or any other employee. The days of the NCAA, universities and coaches taking advantage of the players are over. The players tried for a hundred years to receive better compensation. The NCAA, universities, and coaches told them to pound sand. The players finally went to court and have steamrolled the NCAA, universities and coaches.

So, now that the players are gouging the system, the NCAA, universities and coaches want to negotiate a collective agreement?!? If I’m a player I string them along for a hundred years like they did to the players. But, if they really want an offer, the first thing I’d want as a player is to limit the income and mobility of the NCAA, universities and coaches.

Here is a fictional player proposal that I read to limit other parties compensation- lol:

"As a player, I’d require concessions from them (NCAA, universities and coaches) for me to negotiate. The NCAA gets nothing. Maybe a $25/50 stippen for full time employees. Universities must pay 105% of all sports generated income into player compensation. And, coaches are capped at $75K a year. If coaches or employees of the athletic department want to transfer to a new university they of course will have a twelve to eighteen month non compete waiting period before “transfering” to a new university."

I can tell you the value of a Heisman candidate qb can be a lot higher than the value of a coach. Gus Malzahn has a national championship. This is not a tangent. It’s literally the same team. Exploitation is how to correctly label the pre-NIL system.

I dont think all those heismans satan coached were worth more than he was. Coaches can be the only constant. Great players are there for a short time.

I can tell you the opposite....without that coach does the player come to that school/have a quality surrounding cast/receive quality coaching and training?
You've repeatedly ignored the reality of all the benefits received by athletes to fall back on this exploitation theme. I say again, the kids are free to pay for their own training and development and avoid this horrible exploitation. Fyi....I'm also the dad of a college athlete, appreciative of the degree he received and the benefits in his years as a college baseball player

Unfortunately for you, you are refusing to accept the reality of the situation. The mega conferences are not going back to the amateur model. They are consolidating and pushing for even more TV money. Live in a dream world if you want to, but it is what is happening.

Of course they are....where have I suggested otherwise? I have simply pointed out the fallacy of your repeated exploitation theme. And the myth of seemingly unlimited funds to pay the athletes.
And if there is one track to return to the amateur model, it is if the greed and demands from the kids remain unchecked. Without limits the model is not sustainable. Perhaps football and basketball could spin off in some fashion and the other sports remain. Then you have another dilemma....do uf fans support a team that is only affiliated with uf in some fashion? Semi pro type teams may not gather interest just by being called the Gators

"the greed and demands from the kids" I'm sorry this is just wild to me. They are asking for fair market value (aka what someone is willing to pay them) to do a job that generates billions of dollars. Just because you don't like the outcome doesn't make it "greed." It's pure merit-based as well as they are being paid for what they bring to the table.

It's wild to me you think unproven high school kids are worth the distorted contracts we are seeing....and call it fair market value. We are in an unregulated anamoly that will not work (unless you are texas/tamu type money)
Donor fatigue is real.....a guy like Condron for uf is not going to carry us much longer, when he closes the wallet uf sinks under the current model. And soon college football isn't competive nor interesting, fans become disillusioned and give up, tv contracts and revenue shrink, and the golden goose is dead.
The next step is schools paying that approximately $20m annually to athletes. If every roster athlete gets an even split it's probably about $25k each. That is sustainable for many schools, but likely not all. But at least it is somewhat workable. NIL would still exist, hopefully a little closer to it's intended form vs current form. Imo it's the last best chance to keep college sports working long term

And you think UF is the only school in this situation? The schools know the right move is to compensate players based on revenue share and that is where it is going. Compensation should relate to the fair value that is generated. But who are you to say that some billionaire shouldn't be able to give a fortune to a kid because he wants to see him play football at his alma mater?

This is an obscenely twisted spin. The greed from the NCAA, universities and coaches was unchecked for a hundred years. The players are just now playing the same game they were a victim of for the last century.

Of course UF isn't the only school.....the majority are in this situation and that's why it is so problematic. That's simple logic.
As I explained in detail already, I'm ok with a stipend. I'm not ok with obscene numbers. And FYI, it's not possible to determine individual fair value for revenue that is generated in a team sport.
And I have no idea why you have this weird habit of making statements and attributing the belief to me. No where have I said or insinuated a billionaire can't use his money as he chooses. I said many choose not to, and that some that are choosing to are reluctant and will not/can not continue. That is a fact, not an opinion. I notice you never seem to address the actual points and issues I raise, just make up some extreme points in an attempt to keep your argument alive. I'll let the thread return to the player the thread was created for.
