...thinks they deserved it. The rest all think Cunningham pulled strings. Living in ACC country and dealing with their arrogance, it is so fun to see that even they know! The one guy who thinks they deserve it is the worst, he is the typical TarHeel hoops fan that roots for FSU (of all things) in Football. (Sorta common up here actually). The Gator stuff in my office ticks him off both ways these days.
We used to go to a rustic resort up the mountains from Maggie Valley, NC with our kids. In 2001 I ran into a UNC prof at the resort and asked if he had any hard feelings for the Gators beating UNC. He said "No. I am just so pleased that you guys beat Duke earlier."
Im...not so sure Because each decision by rule requires a supermajority of the people in the room to vote for a team's inclusion. I think a much more likely scenario is that a supermajority of people in that room decided to include North Carolina for the same reason they occasionally fiddle with seedings to pair an under/overseeded team with another to create compelling first round match ups (like they did with Florida/Colorado last year IMO): TV ratings. Its simply that Boise State and West Virginia don't draw the same eyeballs/ratings as North Carolina. So when the line was close enough they felt they could get away with it, they did. Simple as. Moving North Carolina in is really no different than a one seedline move Ive theorized they do in pretty much every tourney to create TV-friendly matchups.
Indiana would have delivered eyeballs also yet unc gets the nod. I think they did it to buoy Duke’s seeding. Without unc the acc only gets 3 teams in tourney. Also, if they went with indiana 1/3 of the field would have been sec/big10. There is real push back against the 2 power conferences in FB/MBB
Indiana is almost as old school as DePaul. Lots of basketball fans want to see UNC lose. They deserve to lose. It is all about the Benjamins.
An entire generation was born, raised, went to high school and now are in college and are of drinking age since Indiana last went to a Final Four. They do not have nearly the brand power today that North Carolina does. 20 years ago sure, but not now. They are fiddling dangerously close to the "Nebraska of College Basketball" territory.
West Virginia had SIX quad one wins. UNC had ONE. West Virginia had FOUR top 20 wins UNC had ZERO West Virginia had TWO.top 10 wins UNC had ZERO. They had two common opponents. Kansas and Louisville. Wet virginia beat Kansas. UNC lost to Kansas They both lost to Louisville UNC is actually like 3 or 4 seed lines behind West Virgina. They may be the most unqualified non AQ team, I've ever seen.
From what I read, one of the committee members said it came down to UNC beat all their Quad 2 opponents.
In order to be 3-4 seed lines behind West Virginia and the last in, that means there has to be 12-16 teams with a better Resume than UNC. Not 1. Even Lundari, who had them out, had them in his "First four out" which means the first seedline outside of the tournament. They got moved 1 seedline, MAYBE 2 at most. There are not 16 teams with a better resume than UNC.
Lol. WVU's worst Quad 2 opponent was #86. Carolina had FOUR that were worse than #90 and 3 that were over #100. (All in the crappy ACC mind you ) There is no metric available that puts them in a realistic spot ahead of WVU. The Quad 1 issue is mind numbing. South Carolina finished dead last in the SEC with the same number of quad one wins as UNC...and that was against Clemson! (Clemson crushed UNC btw)
Oh I agree, that’s just what the committee guy said. Let’s just be honest here, they did not want another SEC team in there because I think all but LSU probably COULD advance past round 1. I really think it was a move to save face for the ACC because had UNc not been in it, it would have been a historically bad showing for the once powerhouse conference.
If their name wasn't UNC they would not have gotten in. I don't see how anyone can argue that. Having said that- it's hard to for me to get distraught over the 50th or whatever team getting left out. I guess if I went to WVU or IU I might feel differently.
