The NCAA/universities CAN regulate outside pay but they have to first recognize the players as employees (which SCOTUS has essentially recognized given the farcical structure the NCAA clung too for years so they could keep all the money) and then negotiate collective bargaining. It is a farce and I have no idea why people with no ownership stake would pay kids sooo much money, but, hell, it is their money. Unfortunately, not sure why the NCAA wouldn't support the continued payment of players from third parties while they keep the revenue - unless they actually believe in players playing for schools and a competitive landscape (hah!). It is pure business now (and has been for decades, the farcical structure just took a while to crumble).
That's fine with me, but they need to go back to the old transfer rules. This year after year of free agency is what is killing the game.
College basketball is as good as it has ever been; why will football be different? Gone are the days of hoarding talent like Alabama used to do. Pay will calm down after this crazy implementation period between the big schools and coaches that develop players will be the ones that have the competitive advantage
Poppycock. The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. The college football caste system will become even more pronounced.
You are spinning off on a tangent. A discussion of coaching salaries is fine, but it's not pertinent to this specific discussion of student athletes....nor is it a viable comparison since there really is no way to equate the value of a coach who runs a program( potentially for many years) to one of 85 scholarship athletes.
100% correct. You also cannot forget that the path to coaches earning that high dollar salary is not easy, pays peanuts in the beginning, and is based on your performance. Eventually becomes a meritocracy of W-L. Applying whataboutisms to college student athlete ‘earnings’ and college coaches’ salaries is dumb.
Players have the same rights as coaches or any other employee. The days of the NCAA, universities and coaches taking advantage of the players are over. The players tried for a hundred years to receive better compensation. The NCAA, universities, and coaches told them to pound sand. The players finally went to court and have steamrolled the NCAA, universities and coaches. So, now that the players are gouging the system, the NCAA, universities and coaches want to negotiate a collective agreement?!? If I’m a player I string them along for a hundred years like they did to the players. But, if they really want an offer, the first thing I’d want as a player is to limit the income and mobility of the NCAA, universities and coaches. Here is a fictional player proposal that I read to limit other parties compensation- lol: "As a player, I’d require concessions from them (NCAA, universities and coaches) for me to negotiate. The NCAA gets nothing. Maybe a $25/50 stippen for full time employees. Universities must pay 105% of all sports generated income into player compensation. And, coaches are capped at $75K a year. If coaches or employees of the athletic department want to transfer to a new university they of course will have a twelve to eighteen month non compete waiting period before “transfering” to a new university."
I can tell you the value of a Heisman candidate qb can be a lot higher than the value of a coach. Gus Malzahn has a national championship. This is not a tangent. It’s literally the same team. Exploitation is how to correctly label the pre-NIL system.
I dont think all those heismans satan coached were worth more than he was. Coaches can be the only constant. Great players are there for a short time.
