Yep, though if I remember correctly that SC team looked extremely dangerous before collapsing down the stretch due to injuries. Not Tennessee dangerous but probably a top 5 team. I think they got mostly healthy again by the time the postseason rolled around but we were playing our best ball then and 2-0'd them in supers.
This is very early in the season. We got it handed to us this weekend, but lots of games to be played. Injuries have hampered us big time early on. O'Sullivan is one of the best D1 baseball coaches out there and has been doing it at a high level for a long time. I predict we're going to be fine and really competitive as the season unfolds.
Was watching basketball today but disappointing day and weekend for baseball. Pen can't hold a 4-1 lead and offense can't add on, only 5 hits. Lot of work ahead.
We battled pretty well this weekend save for a few times. I still like this team and I think we are going to make some noise this season. I would like to run into these douchebags again in Hoover and Omaha.
I think this weekend showed that when we get Menendez back we probably have enough quality pitching to compete with anyone left on our schedule. The biggest hurdle looks to be Clemente going deep into games on Sundays. The bats have a lot to prove though. We had good ABs against Doyle despite not putting up many runs, but outside of Loy and Snead none of the Tennessee pitchers we faced looked like something we shouldn't have been able to handle.
Agree - Kurland being out really hurts, too - He's a veteran who has proven that he can hit big time pitching. PLus he solidifies the infield. I would quit messing with Evans, too, and just pput him in RF and let the kid play. He's, also, proven that he can compete effectively against big time pitching.
I agree with you, but it still is amazing to think that this Tennessee team is that good right now after losing their top five hitters and several excellent pitchers. My concern would be that I saw good stuff from them this weekend, but as far as their pitching went I didn’t see anybody that was absolutely filthy. Many many times I said to myself, we need to be hitting that fast ball that was just thrown right down the middle. I would get it if it was the first, second, or even third week of the season, but it’s not. Hopefully just a rough weekend, but, we will need to sweep Georgia next weekend.
One of the biggest differences between them and us is they have several quality lefties. It seems we only have a couple and our best one is hurt right now. I’ve wondered and not seen anything about it, but do we know when he will be back? As I’ve not seen any specifics regarding his injury.
Sully sez: Scored 4 in the 4th then in the bottom we hit the leadoff man and walked 2 - can't do that in the SEC Vols didn't walk any Couldn't hit Loy - swinging at balls out of the strike zone Got Ga at home - should be motivated
Two things normally happen to a team every season— 1) They build their own character. 2) They show their own character. It’s time for our Gators to show their character.
Yep - It's so important to have your weekend rotation set by the time conference season starts. And with Peterson, Coppola and Clemente, it seemed like we did early on. But when 2 of them suffered injuries it kind of jumbled up the whole pitching staff. It seems we've found King for one of the guys, but now the bullpen and midweek guys are still uncertain. Then with Jones, Kurland and Evans (for a time) getting hurt, it did the same thing with the lineup. Still figuring out the best guys to put out there who can compete at the SEC level.
Time to buckle up, start getting mentally tuff at the plate and play with determination and a chip on our shoulders!! Which of our players will that be???
Sad we were so close to taking 2 of 3. Had a shot at plating them in the first game only down 2 and couldn't, then had a 3 run lead and couldn't hold that. Great teams pull those out. Also disgusting we are so bad against them with Vitello there.
I hope so. Based on what I'm seeing, this team doesn't have one hitter that puts a fear into any sec team. Not one.
