It is telling that no one will answer that question

 

The 1st and 2nd sentences are correct.

The 3rd is what they might do initially or for small tariffs, temporarily “eat the losses”. But over the longer term that isn’t always sustainable. The trade relationship exists in the first place due to free market forces. The govt getting involved is a price inefficiency relative to the free market. So you have less imports, less “supply” vs. the previous market equilibrium. This is why generally speaking tariffs create upward price pressure towards the amount of the tariff.

You think all these products have 10%, 20%, 50% margins that manufacturers will just eat? Cause they like us so much?

They'll sell somewhere else, reduce production, or go out of business. Likely all three for some.

Either way, reduced supply = increased prices for American consumers as a direct result of US gov action. Aka a tax.
