Price of steel going up means the cost on all my new dumpsters will go up. Which means my pricing for my customers will go up. Which means their prices for their customers will go up, or they make less profit. But anyway, tarrifs are good, or something.
Since Trump took office the CRU index for steel has increased substantially. This will only make it worse. Cleveland Cliffs and other domestic suppliers simply raise their rates since their competition’s pricing is higher and CC has more demand than capacity. This is a loss for everyone but domestic steel supplier’s profit margin - at least until the economy tanks.
Canadians have already banded together and are voluntarily boycotting American made products. Apparently they have a thing going where someone sees it's from America, turns it upside down on the shelf, and nobody buys it. They've also pulled millions of dollars in American liquors from the shelves. So even removing the tarrifs at this point we already pissed off our closest neighbor and ally.
There was like a 7 month window in 2022 when the price of dumpsters got so high I quit buying them because I couldn't give customers pricing that was even competitive with the national waste haulers who can buy at bulk discount. I look forward to the return of that.....
We just sold the subsidiary but I helped manage a company that made aluminum products. We imported all our aluminum from Korea because the us manufacturers were too expensive, had poorer quality, and couldn’t give us reasonable lead times. The aluminum indexes are about to look silly with how high they will go.
The cowards in congress could step up for our country, but don't hold your breath. Beyer And DelBene Introduce Legislation Stop Trump Tariff Chaos, Restore Trade Authority To Congress Share on Facebook Share on X Print this Page Share by Email Washington, March 7, 2025 Tags: Economy , Oversight U.S. Representatives Don Beyer (D-VA) and Suzan DelBene (D-WA) today announced the reintroduction of the Congressional Trade Authority Act, legislation that would require the president to submit to Congress any proposal to adjust imports in the interest of national security under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. Beyer and DelBene reintroduced the bill in response to the economic chaos of President Trump’s rapidly changing tariff regime, which threatens to spark trade wars with close American allies. Trump used Section 232 powers to impose or threaten tariffs on aluminum, lumber, steel, and copper imports, driving aluminum prices to record highs and raising housing costs. “Donald Trump is drunk on power and unleashing economic chaos on the country and the world. But the powers which intoxicated him were given to Congress under the Constitution, and Congress must take the power over trade policy back to prevent economic disaster and protect America’s most important alliances,” said Rep. Beyer (VA-08). “Section 232 national security tariffs were historically used sparingly and strategically until Trump, who has grossly abused them. Congress must put a stop to this madness. Our legislation would prevent the abuse of national security authorities to impose tariffs without clear objectives and without Congressional approval for this and future administrations.”
now it's a matter of national security and we have to mobilize to secure safe operations of those critical industries..51st state, here we come
These two representatives were prescient (not that it took much). They first introduced this the week before Trump’s inauguration. Of course it went nowhere but now that Trump is burning centuries long bridges I wonder if a few Republicans will cross party lines to reign him. He’s abusing the law (ironic, but not ironic coming from him) claiming everything is a national emergency which is patently untrue.
This is all just so literally pointless. How much Trump Coin does Canada have to surreptitiously buy in order to get these tariffs removed? Is there a way the USA could just pay Trump the fee up front to not destroy the world economy? Maybe he'd even actually just go 100% away....
Don't hold your breath on the gop ever reigning him in. That ship sailed a long time ago. He is accountable to no one, just the way the gop wants it.
On a larger more diffuse issue I agree. In this case it would only take the constituents of a couple states hit particularly hard to put pressure on their representatives to flip the balance. Not saying it will happen but it’s plausible.
not certain. first and foremost they are interested in retaining power. if he is a vessel to that means, he will be ridden. if he is not, he will be sunk and a new vessel procured. its the economy stupid, and people are going to feel this. lot of maga folks watching their investment accounts plummet and wondering wtf. even feel it in naples right now
This. If Congressmen/women in purple areas and Senators up for reelection in purple states feel Trump is a help to get them reelected, they will continue on bended knees for the Trump agenda. If Trump becomes an albatross for their reelection, things will slowly begin to change. A major recession coupled with continued inflation will cause a lot of people a ton of hardship. And it will be difficult not to blame Trump, regardless of where the truth lies. After all, he's the President, and the buck is supposed to stop at his desk.
That's not a bad idea. We should start a gofundme for Trump. It would be worth billions and the only stipulation for Trump to get it is he has to resign and take Musk and Vance with him.
I must be slow, but I finally put it all together--Trump is trying to blackmail Canada into becoming the 51st state! Who does that? In the first place, who would want a state that had to be strong-armed and threatened to comply? Hostile, much, you think? He's like Putin, trying to absorb countries against their will, using tariffs instead of weapons. (So far. Who knows what madness will seize him when Canada tells him to go pound sand?) I struggled to understand why, oh why, the animosity towards our excellent neighbor and ally to the North, and I could only conclude that it was just Trump being Trump, the big penie swinging the little penie as he does. Power, ego, etc. I can't believe he's trying to blackmail a sovereign country (and a giant one, at that) to downgrade to a state. Canada will never agree. Never. Trump will continue to look like the Fool of the Planet.
