For one, he is changing the rhetoric. Thats huge from a person of his stature. Rhetoric is all most of these empty suits have anyway.
Where? Who is running on this issue in the democratic party? They oppose making this a major issue, since it impacts very few people, and oppose legislation. No democrat that I am aware of has advocated passing a law that demands sports treat gender in any specific way. Correct me if I am wrong but I suspect it would be some small outlier tweet or something. Republicans revel in passing some law on sports that isnt needed to make sure that icky people are made to feel icky. Just let sports handle it. I mean are you going to test the genitals of cornhole competitors? Bowlers? Dart champions? I mean come on.
I am more interested in a change in the tone and rhetoric. People on the side of the majority asking for common sense get labeled bigots or transphobes... Heck, even here. A major liberal politician saying this should soften the tone going forward. As for letting sports handle it...the NCAA is a body of cowards. Not just on this issue, but heck the fact that the football program at Miami even still exists tells us that. They frankly cant be trusted.

I am not even sure what you mean by "common sense" when it comes to THE GOVERNMENT. I am fine with people lobbying and protesting the NCAA for common sense rules but what exactly are lawmakers supposed to do? Pass rules for every instance of every sport? That isnt common sense. Give me the exact actions you want democratic leaders in elected roles to take.

And this is arguably a top 5 representative of the entire party saying this. It changes the narrative. Literally. I think the guy has been a disaster for California.
The government already intervenes irt fairness. See Title IX. Amend Title IX to actually protect women from this. It's a simple common sense fix.

You didnt answer the question. My guess is you cant. Title IX gives women equal access to athletics it doesnt regulate competition rules. You want it to say what?
Actually I can think of two specific ones who will label you with some nasty names and others who like to hint at it. I appreciate that you may see it fairly, but some do not...and twitter/social dialog is much worse. I think this can help cool ot down frankly.
To me this should never have been a political issue because girls have always been allowed to play on football teams if they make the team, whether they’re cis or trans because Title IX protects them. To the republicans credit they turned a non-issue into an issue, and the democrats big mistake was in biting and arguing the point. If the democratic leadership were smart they would only pick a few issues and ignore the rest. In my opinion there are three hills I believe are worth dying on; the costs of goods, preservation of entitlements, and support for Ukraine.
