So what you're saying is, when you hear "Donald Trump", think "Herbert Hoover". Donald Trump's hero is President William McKinley, who started some major tariffs in the 1880's and 1890's as a Congressman, and then became president. The day before he was assassinated, he gave a speech explaining why he had changed his mind on tariffs after he realized they were not good for the economy. The 1890's had a 4-year depression and a 2-year recession. Trump believes that the 1890's were America's best decade economically because it was the Golden Age of multi-millionaires and robber-barons. The suffering of the average person of that period does not cross his mind or bother him in the least. Trump's tariffs against Mexico and Canada are beyond asinine. Our economy is tied to theirs and vice versa, and they have done nothing to deserve the punishment of tariffs. Tariffs against China are generally reasonable to minimize what they spend on their military and technology theft. China is not playing by the accepted international rules of commerce and cannot be trusted. Canada and Mexico do generally play by the international rules of commerce and can be trusted. Trump is the one who cannot be trusted.
If only you and your libbie pals could show our current administration how stupid they are and how you guys have all the answers. It’s a shame.
No, but I think most of us know that a tariff doesn’t mean China or Canada will simply write us a really big check. That it’s not free money.
I don’t know much about tariffs or their short/long term consequences. Can you show me where Trump said other countries will write us big checks? I missed that.
No offense, but if you don't know what Trump has said about how tariffs work, why are you taking exception to anyone who criticizes him over what he's said? https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/09/politics/fact-check-trump-vance-tariffs/index.html
I take note of those who constantly complain about one side. When you’re only taking one side…it’s easy to call out your bias. You are very biased.
Well on one hand we have something proven to work: free market on the other hand we have something proven not to work: tariffs which do you think we’d be on the side of?
you didn't answer the question. If you haven't bothered to pay attention to what Trump has said about tariffs, why criticize those who actually have? Other than, of course, to criticize anyone who dares disagree with Trump.
Last October, Trump said "tariff," was "the most beautiful word in the dictionary." That's not at all weird.
Another dumb Trump take on tariffs is that making our own stuff would make us wealthier. Stop right now & look around you. Did you make anything that you can see? The only thing I can see that someone close to me made is a painting my daughter did of my son playing guitar, but she bought the paints, brushes & canvas & took an art class. Trade is the greatest wealth generator ever. This arg, while stylized, obv extends beyond national borders. If you research how much an iphone would cost if it had to be made in the US the ans is that's a dumb question b/c we can't do it at any commercial scale. We would just cede the mkt to others. #winning who's gittin' ripped off?
That’s an absolutely absurd standard and shows you have no intention of engaging in the merits. Otherwise, if you’re so certain Trump understands tariffs, you could find a quote taking a contradictory position from the one he’s made several times that other countries will pay.
I like this ex b/c I discovered it myself reading the bag on a camping trip. This pic is from the internets so I guess it caught others attention. 1,461 × 929
looking forward to Canada and Mexico prevailing at the WTO. then what, will we join the list of countries not in the WTO? lest anyone forget, we played this game once (2018) but adults talked him off the ledge so they blocked appellate judge appoitnments and crammed the courts with cases to put the WTO in gridlock while they proceeded with a so suit me attitude Trump threatens to pull US out of World Trade Organization Trump tariffs leave WTO adrift in eye of the storm Dupont: "The basic idea of the WTO, to guarantee predictability in world trade, is totally ruined by Donald Trump's attitude. Everyone is starting to wonder what is the point of having invested so much time in trade negotiations. "It finds itself somewhat in the eye of the storm. The people working at the WTO must feel quite helpless and a little dejected." Trump increased tariffs before; is the WTO more ready now? Dupont: "The WTO has been weakened for several years. This worsened during the first Trump administration, as the legal settlement of disputes was paralysed because there are not enough judges on the appellate body" -- their appointment being blocked by Washington. "With no avenues of appeal any more, procedures cannot be followed through, whereas at the start of the first Trump administration, this possibility was always available.
