The media only picks up on the craziest stories in general. There’s wayyyyy more cases that don’t get any national attention whatsoever, mostly because they are not controversial or interesting - so are nothing but local news or police blotter material. I think you conflate "intense pressure to convict" with strong conviction due to overwhelming evidence. The reality of the botched original "coverup" added pressure, no doubt, to get the trial completed correctly. The evidence was unequivocable. I don't believe that fear of violence if they didn't convict was a significant factor in the outcome.
