Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing will pour $100 billion into bolstering chip manufacturing in the U.S., President Donald Trump announced Monday.

The president called the investment a "tremendous move by the most powerful company in the world." The new capital brings TSMC's total investment in the U.S. to $165 billion and will go toward building five new fabrication facilities in Arizona.

The announcement from TSMC, which supplies semiconductors to the likes of Nvidia and Applefor artificial intelligence use, supports the Trump administration's ongoing efforts to make the U.S. an artificial intelligence hub.

Last month, Trump announced a multibillion-dollar AI infrastructure project with Oracle, OpenAI and Softbank. He's also made numerous calls to bring semiconductor production back to the U.S. after much of the manufacturing industry moved abroad. Advancing semiconductor production in the U.S. is a matter of economic and national security, Trump said Monday.

This is a big win by the Trump administration for the American people. It shows maybe tariffs are starting to do what they were intended to do, which is bring critical national security related supply chains on-shore to the US.

Looks like Trump's announcement and TSMC's decision to invest in the US is the continuation of a trend that began when Biden was the president and by the way TSMC is probably motivated in part by the possibility of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, an increased possibility considering Trump's response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

    We’ve seen this rodeo before.

The previous $65B was based on getting subsidies through the CHIPS act. With that in flux, I’d have my doubts. Many people were doubting the end product even with the CHIPS act subsidies, Intel’s part in that has almost become a punchline. Although the TSMC facilities were already being built at least… so at least something is being built… unlike for example the FoxConn debacle in Wisconsin.

TSMC to build 3rd Phoenix factory with new $6.6B from CHIPS Act

So Trump's lying about some fake investment. And some company is pretending to commit to our dullard with something that either already happened, already was agreed upon, or is non-binding and never will happen.

This reality show was better the first time, had better characters. My favorite was The Mooch.

Prompt: Please develop a criticism, no matter how ridiculous, of President Trump getting a major foreign company to spend $100 billion dollars in the U.S.

While it's good news TSMC's investment in semiconductor plants in the US began in 2021 when Trump was still concerned with stashing classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, it was incentivized by Biden's Chips and Science Act and it would have happened if Biden or Harris was in the White House.

Well they supposedly are increasing their investment, on top of the CHIPS act stuff that has been under construction for some time now.

My point was more that Trumps announcements never seem to be based on concrete investments, it’s all about the appearance of doing, they may as well have promised “eleventy trillion”. Now let’s see if they break ground on any additional facilities. I hope they do, that was the purpose of doing the CHIPS act, to get the ball rolling. I’ve just seen some people casting doubt on even the 3 CHIPS act related fabs in AZ, that they may not in fact be cutting edge (either because TSMC is holding back their latest tech or it’s not technically feasible).

I am not sure there is a bigger more important fish in the corporate world we could have onshored to the US outside of TSMC. TSMC sits at the center of the Taiwan problem because their chips empower so many critical technologies in the military and corporate sectors. Blackrock's acquisition of the Panama Canal is also a huge national security victory for the US this week.

This is a company red states have been investigating (and divesting from) due to their investments in China and supposed national security risk for the last couple of years, now you guys are proclaiming a national security victory because they are American. Literally no principles here.

Rick. Lets just ignore each other. You haven't posted a salient point in a long time. The straight up lying you do, I assume either from ignorance, hate, or entertainment just doesnt challenge one intellectually. Have a good time.

Good idea to cut those republicans some slack because it’s not their fault they’re being emotional.
