The layoffs of probationary employees that began Thursday hit soon after cuts at the behest of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) occurred at other climate and environment agencies. The big picture: NOAA's missions require staff to work around the clock to monitor dangerous weather, earthquakes that could cause tsunamis and other hazards.
I have MAGA family and MAGA friends in FLA and all I can say to them is, "elections have consequences" and "thoughts and prayers".
Florida is infested with my relatives, from Key West to Pensacola. None are MAGA. All will suffer if FEMA isn't functional soon, and right now it appears to be a hot mess.

NOAA has like 12K employees. How many are they laying off? I assume they'll still be running the machines.
Based on a quick search, looks like they're going to lose about 10% of their workforce. Do you think they're going to be crippled? That'd be like cutting an NFL roster from 53 to 48. I'm pretty sure they can still play football.

Well the folks there managed to elect Desantis and Trump, so it might be a good time to move. I left SWFL years ago because the state is just too overcrowded now and having been through a number of direct hits, it's just a crap shoot place to live unless you live north of Orlando off the coasts, and if you don't mind the humidity without the coastal breezes, by all means.
Yeah, except now you have a huge hole in your workforce moving forward. The probational employees, who I might add are protected civil service jobs in the sense they need cause to fire them and have legal redress if they so choose for not being fired for cause but because of politics, are the highly educated, highly motivated, and possessing skills the current workforce doesn't have to make real improvements to the efficiency of government and have now been chopped while the workforce itself is older. Now the natural replacements for the coming retirees are gone so we will lose the ability to transfer that retiree knowledge to those folks so they can apply their modern skills to solving the big problems our government has. It is the equivalent shooting yourself in the foot, and just for good measure, in the head and hoping your body pulls through the carnage somehow.
