Colleges think the House settlement approval and direct pay contracts from Universities will be the panacea to re-establish control over player movement. They are going to be really upset when they find themselves right back in court again or even worse: in front of the NLRB.
They are likely trying to protect their 2nd and 3rd stringers who are most likely not being paid nearly as much as the projected starters, but are still better than team X or Y's starters. Even if the shorthorns have wads of money, they want to protect their pocketbooks.
Exactly... worrying about this is silly. It will work it's way out and the prices will level downward. And the price for players in the NIL will even out. Right now Texas is wasting massive money, and it's not even paying off for them. They are desperate to win a Natty.
It hasn't won them a Natty yet, but two consecutive trips to the Final 4 in the playoffs says its working in the right direction.
I'm not exactly against it... if you have the money. All I'm saying is that it's NOT automatically going to win you a Natty. However... they are going to be in the hunt for sure.
Not having the money to consistently recruit the best players almost certainly eliminates teams though. Need coaches, talent, and a little luck to win it all. Osu was there in the final four fairly consistently for alot of years. SOS only got one. Gotta grind it til ya find it.
Napier is old school... but he does have a great eye for talent. We just need to learn how to keep our 2 deep talent year in and year out. I know that's almost impossible, but it's a laudable goal to shoot for. I know that if we had the money, then I would want us to go and spend it, but I still want the most value for that cash. Right now, the quality big-uglies and the big-nasties are stupid expensive to get from other schools. So we need to get them from high school and find those diamonds in the rough... hit-and-miss.
Gotta h ave a little luck no doubt. Spending whatever it took to get DJ is the way to go though. Only a qb can make that big of a difference if we are slightly below talent wise than the top few teams.
That kind of NIL money going to work with good recruiting coaches and coaches that have good schemes... something Texas has Yes, but it's not something that we're doing. I don't know if it's that we don't have the NIL money or if it's Napier refusing to buy these players at what the Texas, OSU and A&M teams of the world are paying. I still believe in using the portal as a supplemental adjunct and not as the main recruiting resource.
Napier damn sure isnt refusing to spend booster money on players, he just has a budget. Some trams seem to have wuite a bit larger budget.
For a team that is a half a season removed from a decade of irrelevance and just off our first winning season in 4 years, I’d say we’re recruiting pretty well regardless of how much NIL we choose to throw around. I submit that winning is more what we need than bigger bags at this point. Everybody we suspect is out-bidding us has also been winning a shitload more games than we have. Look how recruits responded to our 4-game win streak to end the season
