A little history…..thought this might be fun. Trying to put in one place all of the Gators buzzer beater winning baskets. Now Will Richards driving layup vs SC was great…..but hitting a shot with 4 seconds isn’t a buzzer beater. I’m talking shot goes up, buzzer sounds, shot goes through for the victory. I can think of a few…..please tell your thoughts/stories of these….and add any that I missed. Also, love for you to help on any details I’m missing. 1. Cheese vs Wisconsin to go to Elite 8. My favorite one of all. He goes full court in about 4 seconds, and shoots a 3 from about 14 feet away due to his running jump. Dog pile on the court. 2. Mike Miller vs Butler. We were this close to being upset in round 1…..then proceeded to ROLL all the way to the final game, knocking off Duke and UNC along the way. 3. Parsons vs NC State from about 70 feet. 3B. Parsons, same season, vs USC in the O’Dome. 4. Peep Roberson vs UGA at the ODome. Coming up court, 3 pointer straight away to win. 5. Lee Hump in the SEC Tourney….the year before magic happened. Maybe vs Bama? Any details would be appreciated. I felt like it was the last game of an early round, and happene around midnight. 6. Tyree Appleby vs Ohio State. About a 30 footer for the win. 7. This one I recall from my youth, but hoping someone recalls it better. Stacey Poole vs Vandy (??) in the O’Dome. From the elbow. With his big knee brace on. Stacey was a smooth scorer, that just wasn’t able to stay healthy. 8. and……the opposite……Down 1….Orien Greene goes coast to coast, laying it up at the buzzer, down one…..and leaves a finger roll short. Feel free to add details….or even entirely new buzzer beaters.
77/78 - The year before I got to UF, a player named Ric Clarson hit a long jumper to beat LSU. I believe my friend (who had been at the game) said it was a buzzer beater. Not sure though. Four questions with ... No. 93 Ric Clarson
Yep, Lee "Waste of a Scholarship" Humphrey, as a true freshman, was sent in by Donovan and nailed the game-winner vs. Alabama. A harbinger of things to come.
That game shouldn't even have required the Parsons buzzer-beater. The SC star-dude traveled about 30 feet to the hoop for the lead. Grrr...
Devan Downey was one of the kryptonites to that era of Florida basketball teams... He was unstoppable when he played against the Gators I was at Parsons' buzzer beater game. What a wonderful moment in time.
Gators overcoming a 13 point deficit in the SEC quarters to upset the regular season champs on Nembhard's 3 pointer with 1 second left is as close as you get to a buzzer beater without having one.
What a nice memory. It’s funny, that team wasn’t so long ago, but I don’t remember them as well as I do some squads from further in past. Seeing KeVaughn Allen and Jalen Hudson gave me back memories I forgot I had.
That reminds me of story I read long ago that’s come to mind during Urban’s recent push. As a freshman, Lee played in the first couple of games, but not as holiday matchups brought more serious teams. He went to Billy and said “I think I need to redshirt,” and got told “you can’t, you’ve already played this season.” In the dumps for a couple of days, he even wondered if this was where he needed to, but went to one of the assistants and said since he was on a year of eligibility, how could he get on the court? He got told: “Defense. Know what you’re supposed to be doing and get after it. Don’t worry about the offense, that’ll happen.” Started getting some minutes come January, and when #@&*! Drejer left, the ripple effect got him starting, but still not so much as an offensive weapon. Still, when the ball found him in the corner in that Bama game, he was ready. There were a couple of other bench guards (no real match for Drejer), maybe Ryan Appleby and …? But defense got him the trust. I guess lessons on perseverance and defensive work apply to Aberdeen as well as Urban.
Mick was not a fan of Will Wade at all and made it clear. Note that even after the scandal, Wase landed at McNeese State and promptly won COY and the conference championship. Dude can coach, but he lost his big time gig for being a cheater.
