Trump: U.S.military spending could be cut in half- Now 8 percent a year

I think that Trump thinks the proxy war was a catastrophe and he’d prefer that it not become his albatross.

 

A fair assessment, and one I might agree with if Trump weren't so infatuated with Putin. In light of their burgeoning relationship, it's fair to question Trump's motives with respect to Ukraine.

 

What an idiot Trump is. Donald "Dunce" Trump is just stupid enough to believe whatever Putin and Xi tell him. "We're spending 50% less money on the military--your turn, Trump! Our secret warehouses are bursting at the seams with new equipment, but don't you worry about that--it's all medical equipment. Yeah, that's the ticket. Medical equipment."

America gets what it wants because of its military. No one can challenge it. This is why having such extreme levels of debt has not crushed us yet.

The single thing you can do to make America worse is weaken the military. Halving the military spending while in a military AI and space race with China is absolutely the worst possible choice that could be made.

I suspect Trump wants to do something treacherous like wanting to mend fences with evil Russians.

 

I was a history major, at UF, where I learned that they come and go.

 

Didn't Jimmy Carter do something like this with the Soviets? And didn't they basically ignore it?

 

The sad part is, like so many things MAGA, it will poison an otherwise good idea, which is major reform to the DOD purchasing and bid process.

It’s not so much that I want our reigning empire to decline so much as it IS in decline. And I don’t consider that a bad thing so long as we reckon with our decreasing ability to throw our weight around in the world. In fact, I suspect that’s what’s happening as we speak.

 

See this is the opposite of America first. We have the opportunity to fight in the next great space race and a frontier in AI. Instead we are cashing out and paying "dividends" to the billionaires and oligarchy instead of investing in this direction. Sure, spending has to be dealt with in a major way. DOD is 14% of the federal spending, so some of that will need to come through efficiencies in DOD. However, revenue side needs to be addressed as well.
