I was at the return home celebration in the Swamp and quite a few fans threw tennis balls for fun. I have a photo somewhere of Shintzius holding one and laughing his ass off.
IIRC it was only two tennis balls thrown and John Clougherty called the T as the crowd had been warned before the game so not a surprise. Sloane sent Dwayne S to the line to shoot the two free throws and he needed to make both to send the game to OT. Of course he made them both. Gutsy call and only makes the legend better. If Vandy would have won that game I think they would have been SEC regular season champs or at very least in a tie for it but the Gators go to Red Stick and beat LSU for our first ever SEC championship in either basketball or football.
Nobody has mentioned our depleted team that beat Shaq, Stanley Roberts, and Chris Jackson aka Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf that when he was on was REALLY on. That was special. Dwayne Davis, Scott Stewart, Brian Hogan and some other guys. LOL.
Going back a long way… Shout out to our win vs #9 Bama at home in 87. It seemed to pave the way for our first ever NCAA Berth and Sweet 16 later that season. Again folks we had never even made the dance before that season! Plus I was in the front row so very special.
I watched this game on tv. The twin towers. When I see Shaq on tv/commercials, it makes me feel good knowing LSU paid big money for him and we took them down! Shaquille admitted he got paid a few years back.
That was a good one. I have always wished Gator Nation would forgive Teddy and bring him back as an assistant. His scoring was legendary and I feel he could help guards and bigs with their shooting form. Everybody was estatic when he signed, didn’t disappoint either. Legendary….
Our bigs, we can always have some strong beef on the floor. I feel all four bigs are feeling more comfortable playing in their roles, great growth as we head down the stretch. With Urban and Moore now getting some minutes, our team has become better/deeper, as keeping players fresh and less silly mistakes. These two guards have game also. I said early in the preseason, we will be a tough out for anybody we play, as long as we stretch the bench, at any venue. Auburn put the hat on that. LOL
This was the first game that came to my mind when starting to go down the road of comparisons. I think sometimes we get caught up too much in rankings throughout the year, but we know retrospectively that that Kentucky team was very clearly one of the best teams in the country despite their #7 ranking at the time, they did win 6 games in the NCAA Tournament that year, after all. But what makes that game so impressive to me is less about whether that Kentucky team was as good as this year's Auburn team but the fact that that year's GATORS team was nowhere near the caliber of this year's GATORS team. FLORIDA was unranked and had a losing record in conference play; according to Big Blue History, the line was "around 14 pts," FLORIDA was also a mere 1-6 on the road (thanks JU!) and 0-4 against top 25 teams. More than that, the weight of a history of losing at Rupp was extremely heavy on the program's shoulders. The last win up there came against a team that would finish 13-19 (1989), and then we'd lose another 8 in a row. That 1998 win was our 6th win ever in Lexington...for a series that goes back to 1927. All that said, this win was different (AU game); it was less about shocking the world and displaying how big of an upset we could pull off. It was more about FLORIDA asserting it's claim to simply say: "we deserve to be considered among the top teams in the nation." A very powerful win. And just a completely different feeling afterwards. It's been said before, but this is a really good basketball team; it's been an extremely fun team to follow. I don't have a good answer for where the win ranks (definitely very high!), nothing was specifically earned, but it was just another notch on the stick with hopefully more to come. I'm very happy for the folks that were able to attend, and enjoyed hearing that "Great To Be a FLORIDA GATOR!" chant towards the end of the game. Go GATORS! ,WESGATORS
He has largely been forgiven. Years ago… when he was still somewhat exiled… I wrote an article about his odyssey. It was apparently well received within the UAA. Teddy called me one night and said Foley pulled him aside and told him he read it, and that he was always welcome around the program. Since then, Teddy has been at many games… usually taking kids from his academy. He is an incredible student of the game and a great speaker/teacher. But him coaching in college is a big bridge to cross. I’d love to see it happen.
I will never forget, joe b. Hall saying, in my life, I have never seen one single player almost single handily destroy a Kentucky team. joe B. Had retired and was on the TV as an analyst for the game. Jason put on a show that night. The nation saw a unique talent that hadn’t come around since Pistol Pete.
Jarvis Hayes and Peep with a shootout at the end with Peep hitting the game winning three with Hayes in his grill. 2003 season IIRC.
Parsons buzzer beater against the unstoppable Devan Downey is my personal greatest (attended live) moment Beating Ohio State for the repeat is my #1 moment overall moment
do you recall how much he got? I wonder if Herschell Walker will ever come clean on what he got from uga.
