Duke beat them by 6 at their home court. We beat them by 9 on Auburn's home court. Best win by anyone this season. Not even close.
I attended 20+ straight years at the SECt. And that 2005 win over UK in the finals was my absolute favorite game. Early in the game, Cat fans were mockingly yelling “SHOOT!” Every time Walsh touched the ball. Then he began to shoot and hit everything. And so my buddies and I flipped the script… yelling “SHOOT” every time he got it. And when he inevitably drained it, we would go absolutely nuts. I’m sure the entire section of Cats fans wanted to smash us. Walsh had 26 points.
Yessss! We played - and beat - Kansas in the ODome in December of 2013. That Kansas team had some players including freshman Wiggins and Embiid. I was sitting in the very last row at the top of the ODome with my back against the wall. Cheered so hard that night I broke my Orange and Blue shaker
For me, this win ranks as second only to the 2/1/1998 game at Lexington when we won 86-78. I was cheering for UF with my wholeheart! That win made me switch my allegiance from UK to UF (in basketball) as I was born in Louisville, Kentucky and was brought up as a UK fan. I was a senior that year... I have loved UF basketball with all of my heart ever since... Go Gators!
Its the first time EVER that a team beat unanimous #1 teams at home and on the road. I believe they mentioned that in game. Either way, we played well today. You can't be great every minute but we just get those boosts the moment we need them keeping the game from ever getting away from us. Plus that X factor that every great team has that is beyond talent but the ability to use that talent in the most extreme and nerve racking moments. This is a special team and I think we are definitely final 4 material and obviously there isn't a team in the country we can't beat. It's always a matter of some luck but in a tourney you need more than just that and we have it. Excited to see what the rest of the year brings us. It's feeling more and more special. I didn't think we had much of a chance at beating Auburn at home just because of the tension. I love being wrong when it comes to secretly thinking these things. As for every game, it all depends. There were some during and pre-"04" moments that were just crazy! Mike Miller throwing the ball up for the buzzer beater by sitting on the floor or something I can barely remember. Yeah, definitely hard to say when it's frest. Remember this one? lol
I realize that "newer is always better than older" creeps into our psyches, but if we look at it not only as who we played and where, but also as to what we just witnessed - a potential lightbulb turning on in this team at a REALLY good time in the season - then I would say this HAS to be the best non-postseason win in Gators history. The only time I have felt this in awe was in the NCAAs during the second weekend of the first NC run. Things were going alright for that team and we realized that it was built to reflect what success T. Green had in the game. We played Georgetown in a grinding fashion and it took a great play by Brewer close to the end to pull it out. But there was this manic Villanova team we had to play in two days and I thought "well that makes it the end, but we are setting up for a nice run to the FF next year". And THAT game was when I realized that we were built for a NC run THIS year. And the rest is history. Again, did a lightbulb truly turn on in this team, from the players to the coaches? It certainly feels like it.
Highlight consistently forget Canyon Barry’s all out sprint to block a Badger basket in those fraught moments that gave us the chance we needed for that shot.
May have a chance for a third win this season. Bama may be #1 when we play them. Beat no other team has done that.
Beating Auburn at Auburn is the best win you can get this year. I don’t think Florida has ever owned that win before, even including the postseason. In 2006 and 07, beating UCLA and Ohio St were amazing because they gave us national titles. However, they weren’t the best teams of those seasons, which were UConn and Florida, respectively. In 2000, the Gators did take down the number one seed Duke, but even then, Duke had already suffered two losses at home. This weekend’s victory is a peak feat in Florida history.
Not saying they were the best, but my favorites have been: 2005 vs Kentucky 2007 vs Ohio State 2006 @ Kentucky 2010 vs Michigan State 2014 vs Kansas 2014 @ Tennessee and @ Kentucky The list is getting too long so I have to rethink it now. But this one is gonna be top 3 for sure.
Beating Pearl at Auburn and beating Tennessee...both #1 in the same season is just otherworldly. This feels bigger than the 18-0 year because we were clearly the best team that season. The SEC is so stacked this year. These wins are legendary stuff.
I came prepared to call yesterday the greatest game ever. But seriously. If someone can hit up the campus library microfiche, I would sell my vote for a snapshot of twodaparty in a wig and body paint high fiving Matt Walsh.
As a side note... AU will NOT, repeat, NOT be matching the 2014 Gators incredible undefeated run through the SEC.
If we play another #1 team this year, they may be looking over their shoulder. Be kind of hard to sneak up on them.
At this point, UT’s win over us last week is probably up there in the top 3-5. Obviously ours over them too, but we’re the better team so I’m giving them the better win lol
Maybe not as important and may be far too old for most here, but I will always love the game at Vanderbilt Middle School Cafetorium where a technical foul was called on Vandy for raining tennis balls on the court at the end of the game. Dwayne Shintious
I thiu I know Auburn is tough by their record. But. I thought we matched up well against them and made them look beatable.
