I have a family member from South Africa. Recently met his dad. His father, a generational South African going back 200 + years. Last year the South African government forced him to sell his very successful family farm for pennie’s on the dollar or loose it all-together. No choice but to sell. They have several farm industry friends with the same story.

 

Of course the wealthy class in South Africa aren’t going to want to just leave everything behind, that’s not how immigration works.

There is some racial discrimination and growing white poverty that’s been going on for years. This is not news to me. Zimbabwe made even worse policy mistakes when it came to treatment of their white elite “plantation owners” and it led in many ways to the collapse of their currency. I don’t think the fact there is an anti-white bias post apartheid is in dispute. So perhaps some of these poor white Afrikaners lacking skills and unemployed in South Africa would be interested in emigrating here. But then one wonders (lol not really) why we are suddenly concerned with the plight of these people, and are rushing to send home folks who would have it much worse in countries like Venezuela or Haiti?

Ironically by halting aid, this admin is probably going to make the situation in South Africa slightly worse. I looked up a dollar figure, and it looks like roughly $450 million relative to their govt budget at $128 Billion. So doesn’t seem like the loss of $450 million would be that devastating overall. Just means they will listen less to the U.S and more to the Chinese.

 

Trump's entire world view is that the US should be cut off from the world and every major power should have their own sphere of influence.

China wants Taiwan, fine. Israel wants to bulldoze Gaza, great. Russia wants to rape and murder in Ukraine, perfect.

Our alliances have helped us to dominate the planet, and that isn't good for Trump because it is easier to grift in a smaller pond full of ignorant people.

That it means a world with more wars, less peace, less trade and less ability to work together to solve common problems is lost on him.

A compromised, weak man like Trump will just make us weak as a Nation.

You are seeing it happen before your very eyes, but unfortunately his supporters won't see it until they FEEL it themselves, which will probably be too late.

 

Trump is demanding the govt of South Africa do more DEI, because he apparently believes in systemic racism against whites in the context of South Africa.

In order to threaten them over this lack of DEI, he freezes their aid, which will just push them back to continue their growing ties with China. Giving China more exclusive rights to South African mining.

Brilliant! (or rather than sarcastically brilliant, perhaps pushing them to China is the intent of the plan!).

By the way this will be the effect of Trump's cutoff of aid to South Africa.

I guess it would be fine with MAGA if a couple of hundred thousand South Africans that could be receiving medication through PEPFAR die.

Sadly, Dimwit Donald cannot limit his ignorant speech to just his own country; he needs to spread ignorance and death worldwide.

I have traveled to South Africa several times and have spent weeks each time.
Yes, the government is always looking for ways to take land from the white landowners. There are always threats that if the land owners do not sell out cheaply.. the land will be taken. I know two Safari/ big game hunting outfits this has happened to. Thousands of acres put aside for hunting and conservation ( and yes.. they go hand in hand) hundreds of Africans employed, houses and on one of the ranches… fed and schooled. But the land was too valuable and the govt hated that it was owned by a white family.
Go visit S Africa sometimes. It’s in decay. Roads are crumbling, schools are failing, crime is rising. Why? Because those that took power do not know how to govern, how to run a country. Graft has become a huge problem. Corruption from the highest levels is rampant. And so … land and money grabs are on the agenda.
I couldn’t care less who runs the country or what color their skin is. What do care about is how they run the country. Because S Africa is an amazingly beautiful place that needs to be preserved, not raped.
And not selling minerals to the US will hurt S Africa dearly.

 

PEPFAR was started by Bush over 20 years ago. Has probably kept 10s of millions of people with HIV from getting AIDS ....... and probably saved 10s of millions of lives.

Not only will that obviously end, they'll have supplies literally rotting in pipelines very soon, if they don't already.
