It can be done. The 2006 team had a mid offense and championship Defense. That will probably be what it takes to get to playoff football for the Gators with Napier calling plays.
I believe it indicates a distinct lack of self-awareness. It is what it is.....let's go with it and the chips will fall where they fall.
Can it be done? Sure. This is college football, anything can happen. When Tennessee won the national title with Tee Martin, they had tons of close wins and lucky bounces. Michigan won last year with a fantastic defense and an offense that "only" averaged 35 points a game. We have neither of those right now, so the odds are stacked against us. Still, it is what it is. Billy is making his bed.
The lack of self awareness on how other coaches in the industry perceive his play calling is astounding. None of the major programs would or have for more than a 2 year stretch let this man call plays except us. Saban passed like 14 times… Ok coach…
Here’s another way of looking at it: Billy knows that the big money boosters pretty much demanded him to hire an OC back before the LSU game. It was even thought to be a condition of continued employment. We knew it - Billy definitely knew it. So does anybody think Billy is stupid enough to thumb his nose at everybody and announce he never plans to hire an OC? Or might this be a way to get the media off his back without having to say “well you see, I would have hired a OC by now, but there’s nobody out there I want”? I mean, what is he supposed to say?
If we can spend over a million for a couple of position coaches to come be co-DC’s then we can pony up and go pay one of the 100 better play callers than Billy Napier. The excuse making is disgraceful.
It seems all coaches have an Achilles Heel. Play calling just might end up being CBN's. This is what it is for 2025 season and we should find out quickly. Games 3 and 4 on the road at LSU, and SCUM. If they are 2 and 2 after those games, right or wrong the hot seat will be burning.
Someone needs to explain this to me. Weird dude. He must have forgotten he was replaced where he wasn't the decision maker of who is the OC.
Man, I hope you're right Skink. But part of me thinks you're giving him too much credit. Were it me, I would hire a guy that could do a little more because it's in my best interest and frees up my time. Part of me thinks he has an axe to grind with his past. Was he really advised(implored) to hire an OC?
I hope I’m right too Die. Interesting take on an axe to grind with his past — you talking about the last 2 seasons or before UF? To your question, I’ve been told by more than one “insider” that ~midway through this season he was told something to the effect that his seat was hot and if he hopes to keep this job he had better bring in an OC. Something to that effect..
Pre UF. I can envision our offense improving next season because DJ is going to be better. Part of our middlin PPG was having had Mertz as our starter. If only STs and Defense stay where they were or improve. Not fair to put it all on offense and our D was wonderfully stingy last half of season. Florida Defense Rattles Tiger Cage, Sacks Nussmeier Seven Times - Florida Gators Never gets old.
"under Napier’s guidance. Florida’s offense ranked 58th in scoring in 2022, 59th in 2023, and 64th in 2024" Will be interesting to see what this year brings. On paper we should be hard to stop. I'm hoping for the best.
Kirby Moore Mizz Brennan Marion UNLV Andy Ludwig Utah Pat Shurmur Colorado Buster Faulkner Ga Tech Bobby Petrino Arkansas Kendal Briles TCU Colin Klein A&M Andy Kotelnicki Penn State Ben Arbuckle Oklahoma Let me know if you would like me to keep going.
Brennan Marion is a head coach Kendal Briles has been hated at his last 3 stops Arbuckle is interesting but VERY raw, inherited Cam Ward and basically has lighted up weak opponents and struggled otherwise in his short career Ludwig quit midseason because Utah offense was so bad Kirby Moore has been highly criticized for a disappointing second year at Mizzou when he returned so much talent from a successful year one(for the record I like him) Looks like getting to a 100 may be harder than you thought....since just listing names doesn't make the list accurate
Marion wouldn’t be at Sacramento State if Billy would have done the right thing last year. Ludwig had no QB. Billy Napier was fired from his Last real OC job so that’s obviously not a deterrent for us.
