Spurrier must be thinking where was the 12 team playoff when I coached

They were independent at that time

My bad, I thought they were in the ACC. I seem to remember them playing a lot of ACC basketball teams during that time.

So I live here in SC and know a lot of USCe fans.
Theoreticals are tough but that's the question to me- do they go back to the ACC when the SEC first expanded. (Assuming we took FSU.)
It's easy to say yes, but USCe burned a lot of bridges when they left the ACC.
Also the ACC already has the state of South Carolina with Clemson- so its not like SC adds a market.

IMO the most likely scenario is that they stay independent and join the SEC when TAMU joins- as someone else said.

But also- does Holtz and Spurrier come to USCe if they are not in the SEC.
    I doubt it.

I’m inclined to agree with you. We moved to Columbia in 1990 and lived there through the decade of the 90s. I remember waiting on the edge of my seat hoping for the semis to decline the SEC because USCe was ready to jump at the opportunity. The Gamecocks had nothing going on as an independent — they were still reliving distant memories of George Rogers. It was a wonderful thing to get SEC football in Columbia. And it was a fun place to live while UF was living its best decade ever.

Doubt they could have stayed independent, nobody did in the 90's except Notre Dame, no money in it anymore, if they can't get back into the ACC they probably end up on Con USA and become a 2nd tier nobody.

They should be sending fsu a thank you card every year.

We got our tail whooped by Miami in the 2000 Sugar Bowl and in the 2002 regular season, yet you think we would’ve beaten their greatest team ever in 2001? Interesting.

I definitely do- looking at Miami back then and their schedule in 2001. And ours...
You mention 02- you do know Spurrier was no longer our coach then? So that's irrelevant.

But about 2000 vs 2001. We were a good team in 00, but not great...
Grossman was just a freshman QB in 2000, but in 01 he was firing on all cylinders.
He probably should have won the Heisman...

Let's look at the season schedule and "body of work" for both teams...
Miami- only faced 1 top 10 team- and as i pointed out- they didn't even deserve to be top 10. (Nebraska.)
They did beat some teams ranked 16-25 but the BC and VPI games were close. They were hardly dominant vs 2 teams with a pulse.
    (They did destroy Syracuse.)

Meanwhile we barely lost to 4th ranked Tennessee and destroyed LSU (who finished 7th), Maryland (11th) and South Carolina (13th)

So Miami really didn't beat anyone, while we destroyed 3 solid teams and lost a 50/50 game to a great team.
Yes we did lose to Auburn- in a driving wind and rain storm.

Many times when a really good team is not tested during the year they falter when they finally do meet up with a great team.
2006 OSU and Florida comes to mind.

But it's all theoretical/ opinion. Feel free to disagree.

I mean it’s all hypothetical so no one can really say what would’ve happened. I just don’t see that particular Miami team losing to anyone that year, just my opinion tho.

If they could not have lost to anyone as you say, then how did VPI come to within 2 points of them??
It was a missed 2 point conversion. So if VPI makes that, then they are tied. And who knows what happens.

IMO- it's a circular argument...No one could beat them, because no one did beat them...

But again- 2 others who everyone thought were world beaters...
1991 UNLV basketball (Beaten by Duke in the FF. Duke's first title. UNLV was undefeated.)
2006 Osu. Most said they were the best in the nation, by far. And if they had played some stiff (like 01 Nebraska) I'm sure tOSU would have wiped the floor with them, and today people would say "all time best team" and "no one could have beaten them."

Instead we made them look silly. Even though we had lost a game and had a few close calls.
See- we had a tough schedule. They did not...
LIKE.... (wait for it)...the 2001 Miami team and the 2001 Florida team.

but again, it's all theoretical. And I have been clear that for this thread I have on my O&B glasses.

We definitely could have beaten Miami. 2000 we were young and inexperienced, but talented…thus we lose 37-20 (I think that was the score) to Miami in the Sugar Bowl. 2001 was the year. It was like comparing the 2007 and 2008 teams. Similar roster, similar talent, much more experienced. Miami had more overall talent, for sure, since it was probably the most talented team of all time. But the Gators executed that year. When that offense was clicking it was unlike any other offense I’ve seen.

2002 is an unfair comparison. Miami was still stacked. We lost Steve, Graham, Gaffney, and Reche and added Zook, Zaun, and Bubble Screens.
