So the market crashes, Mexico promises to do the thing that it does every year or so anyways, and Trump takes it (knowing that his fans will claim it as some sort of victory). Great use of everybody's time and the reputation of the US government, such as it is at this point.

 

Provides essentially duty free markets for our products, engages in all sorts of joint security and law enforcement programs, and works closely on all sorts of international agreements (most of which you have never and will never hear about because they are boring).

• President Donald Trump said that he is pausing for one month a new 25% tariff on goods entering the United States from Mexico after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to immediately send 10,000 soldiers to her country’s border to prevent drug trafficking.
• The announcement of the pause came two days after Trump slapped 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, as well as a 10% tariff on goods imported from China.

 

MAGA is all about political stunting.

Smart policy takes a back seat to getting the appropriate emotional response from the political opposition. Simple minds need simple concepts.

This is a redux of NAFTA. Bluster up a storm and then when the dust settles basically the same agreement. However,... i am not sure how he would fund tax cuts now if it isnt on the back of the sales tax aka tariffs. So.. are they serious or not? Quite the show.

 

They are our #2 and #3 trading partners, behind China.

If we want leverage vs China we probably need them to be #1 and #2 and get stronger as allies (with more political and civil stability in Mexico).

To ask “what do they do for us?” is an extremely stupid question.
