You used way too many multi-syllabic words, man. You need to tone down that kind of language around here.

I said it would hurt them more than it hurts us. I already agreed you were right that I shouldn't have been so absolute about my statements in post #108, why are you still trying to win?

That would only be the case if a price was below its market equilibrium point. In that case raising the price would result in higher revenues. But if a price is already at or above its equilibrium point, raising the price further would decrease revenues. At least that's what economics text books of the 1980s said. So much of that stuff was either wrong or based on perfect hypothetical markets that don't exist in reality. The free market could do no wrong as far as the economists of the 1980s were concerned. Milton Friedman was a god.

All that said, Trump's tariffs on Canada and Mexico are really dumb and will hurt the US economy. The China tariffs are mostly ok because China is a totalitarian state that is flooding the world with cheap products subsidized by the Chinese state.

Doesn't that make my point, though? The US starts a trade war and it costs us more? China probably came out ahead, shifting their AG business to Brazil. Buying stuff from the US isn't cheap.

Found this chart of Chinese Worldwide exports for the last 10 years. Can someone point to where Trump's 2018 tarrifs Hurt China? Doc already posted what they did to America above. If China lost exports to the US in 2018, looks they more than made it up elsewhere, like I thought they would...

I have never argued that tariffs don't hurt us far, far more than China. You claimed it didn't hurt them at all. I quote, "The tarriffs themselves don’t hurt China at all…" I merely said that was incorrect. Now, you seem to agree.

Cool chart shows China trade balance long term ... It had actually been in decline a few years, until Trump's initial tariffs in 2018 ... then it takes off again in 2019 ... what happened in 2018/2019? China finds new trading partners all over the world?

Dude, for the third time, I've admitted you are right on that point. I shouldn't have been so absolute. WTH is going on here?

Here's what I know ... 50+ posts ago I said something wrong. I said it wouldn't hurt China "at all" instead of saying it would hurt us "far, far more" than China. Since then I've admitted I was wrong to be so absolute 3 times. 4 now, I guess. Still, for some reason, it keeps coming up like it's groundhogs day or something ...

There are so many reasons we set tariffs, and any time it happens, the histrionics come out in force. How about when Trump called out the Chinese in the steel industry? The MSM told us it would hurt the economy, and the Democrats & some Pubs fell in line with the false narrative. 3 years later from Reuters:

U.S. steel industry groups and the United Steelworkers union on Wednesday urged President Joe Biden to keep in place the steel tariffs imposed three years ago, saying that lifting them now would undermine the industry’s viability.

Every time Trump talks tariffs and then implements the media tells us we will pay more. Sometimes we will pay a bit more, but the tariffs are not set on retail. You are not paying 10% on the retail of the product. This is the same MSM that has been wrong about everything. At roughly the same time as steel, we put a 40% tariff on washing machines. Can you imagine how the MSM and liberals melted down over this? Poor people are gonna have dirty clothes! The prices of washing machines really never changed.

As I shared earlier, the Canadian, Mexican, and Chinese tariffs are in place to punish those countries for pushing fentanyl into the USA. Canada is pooing their drawers. They are a weak country with extremely weak leadership. China's small packages are now being taxed and looked at to see what is being shipped into our country.

Have you paid attention to the manufacturing work coming back to the States?

And if you are so worried about tariffs affecting the cost of Chinese cheap shit goods, buy American. Support American Made. Support an American small business that doesn't use child labor.

    regulation is costly

    https://www.politico.com/news/2020/07/14/donald-trump-coronavirus-farmer-bailouts-359932

Government payments to farmers have surged to historic levels under President Donald Trump as the Agriculture Department floods the industry with cash to stem the financial losses from Trump’s tariff fights and the coronavirus pandemic.

Direct farm aid has climbed each year of Trump’s presidency, from $11.5 billion in 2017 to more than $32 billion this year — an all-time high, with potentially far more funding still to come in 2020, amounting to about two-thirds of the cost of the entire Department of Housing and Urban Development and more than the Agriculture Department’s $24 billion discretionary budget, according to a POLITICO analysis. But lawmakers have taken a largely hands-off approach, letting the department decide who gets the money and how much.

Ontario to remove U.S. alcohol from shelves after Trump's tariffs announcement

Ontario will pull all American alcohol from its government-run liquor shelves beginning Tuesday in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian imports.

Outlets of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario will also take U.S. products out of its catalog so other retailers can’t order or restock those items, according to a Sunday statement by Premier Doug Ford.

“Every year, LCBO sells nearly $1 billion worth of American wine, beer, spirits and seltzers. Not anymore,” Ford said. “There’s never been a better time to choose an amazing Ontario-made or Canadian-made product.”

Wait, you mean the steel manufacturers want less competition? Meanwhile, their customers weren't so thrilled. The price of steel rose substantially and that was beyond the regulatory cost of many having to constantly apply for exemptions. You know, big government.

Steel tariffs hurt manufacturers downstream, data shows

BTW, to your claim that washing machine prices didn't change, the price of a washing machine increased by about 34% during the time of that tariff.

How the Section 232 Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum Harmed the Economy

is this serious? Of course the steel industry wants welfare....Only cost $650,000 per welfare job. You lefties gots some funny maths. You do understand that steel is an input for many industries, right?
    • The Section 232 tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum raised the cost of production for manufacturers, reducing employment in those industries, raising prices for consumers, and hurting exports.
    • The jobs “saved” in the steel-producing industries from the tariffs came at a high cost to consumers, at roughly $650,000 per job saved according to the Peterson Institute for International Economics.
    • According to Tax Foundation estimates, repealing the Section 232 tariffs would increase long-run GDP by 0.02 percent and create more than 4,000 jobs.
    • Other estimates, such as those from economists Lydia Cox and Kadee Russ, suggest that job losses from the tariffs were as high as 75,000.
