“Fair winds and following seas”? I think that guy was on a boat with sails. It’s still not really bad unless it’s big seas, and that’s bad no matter what your heading is. A big following sea also turns into an overtaking sea, and that’s no fun at all. Probably the reason you don’t like the following seas line, which is not really what that guy was talking about.
Sure man whatever you say. I’ve buried the bow of a 15 foot outboard in following seas, and buried the bow of a 32 foot twin drive in following seas — and boats in between. I’m speaking from experience here. Sure it’s not a big deal if the seas are light, but when big rollers line up on your stern it’s a very busy game working the throttles and the wheel the entire time to keep things from going to shit in a hurry. And yes I was having fun with the “fair winds and following seas” line, but I’ve thought that line was funny for a long time.
Fair winds is a big part of that line is what I’m saying. Overtaking seas are bad and that’s what you’re describing. That’s when a following sea is outrunning the boat. A following sea with fair winds won’t have you burying the bow, but it will push your sailboat along nicely. The line is not talking about big rollers. “Fair winds”.
You aren’t wrong. It would help if my bow had been 15 feet above the water line like they were when that saying came about.
My friend, big rollers and fair winds are not mutually exclusive. But hey, we’ve beat this to death. Keep the shiny side up
I dunno. We should be able to do a little better than this. We're Florida for crying out loud. Coach Skip
I think keeping this guy is more important for us to keep than looking for some replacement at DC. Get the edge straight with coaching and personnel and we should have a D to be reckoned with.
Quite a rise by Chatman, considering how many were so unimpressed when we hired him. Him and Harris exceeded most everyone's expectations.
Skipper was a good recruiter. Would be a nice add as an analyst. Chatman and Harris were Both strong hires last year along with Roberts. I’d bet on Chatman hopping on the NFL train if offered which leaves a lot of questions and possibilities for next years defensive staff
Likely a 4 year contract given they have a new coach. NFL on resume and no recruiting or coddling young kids with hand out. Not a bad life
Navy term from the sailing days. When someone retires from the Navy, they are also wished fair winds and following seas.
Yeah I was just having a little fun with it. I’m certainly running vessels a lot smaller than anything the Navy has — and the most treacherous seas I’ve experienced have been overtaking me from the stern. Racing down the face of one wave to keep from going sideways, then powering up the back side of the next wave — on the throttles, off the throttles, on the throttles……it’s a workout. It’s happened in fair winds and sunny skies too — tides rushing through jetties for example. Anyway, all in fun for an off-season discussion
4 years for a position coach? That would be nice if possible, but highly unlikely, and also highly unlikely that new coach gets to 4 years based on the recent history of the Bears.
