New audio from Black Hawk helicopter says they had American Airlines jet 'in sight' | Watch

incorrect. not only did they respond they requested permission to fly based ont heri visual clearance. they had the outbound instead of the inbound in their sights. 100% pilot error.

odd how the single most important piece of evidence has gotten very little airtime

Black Hawk helicopter was warned of plane before D.C. crash, audio reveals - The Washington Post

Air traffic controllers twice alerted the crew of a U.S. Army helicopter to the presence of an inbound American Airlines jet, with the first warning issued two minutes before the aircraft collided Wednesday night near Reagan National Airport, radio transmissions show.

While the quality makes it difficult to hear the audio recordings, aviation experts who reviewed the communications for The Washington Post said that a member of the Black Hawk helicopter crew responded each time by saying that he could see the plane and requested “visual separation,” meaning the helicopter crew would maintain a safe distance. Each time, the request was approved.
    ...................................
The radio transmissions indicate that the helicopter had more than enough time to take action to avoid the plane, according to three aviation experts. That the helicopter crew said it would do so but did not, experts told The Post, suggests that the crew may have seen something else — such as another aircraft in the area — and not the American Airlines flight flagged twice by the air traffic controller.

“If he was looking at the right airplane he wouldn’t have hit him,” retired National Transportation Safety Board investigator Scott Dunham said. “They were miles apart. … The resolution literally takes seconds.”

I’m wondering why the quality of the audio is the same as the audio at a drivethru.

I actually was trying to debunk the rumor that a m a le to female transgender was the pilot. I had 2 sources that said Sndrew Eaves was the pilot which I got from non-social media sources. As I said, if I was a publicly known poster I would "wait for all the facts to come in." As an anonymous poster I'd rather just get to the truth quickly. That means posting rumors is okay because if they are fake they will be quickly debunked. On soci a l media as set up by Elon Musk, if an X poster gets something wrong readers get to post corrections to what was said. Good system imo

I wasn't trying to criticize you. I was just trying to say people post total BS and other people run with it as if it's true.

Was he the guy who was flying? Probably not but he deserves responsibility for the crash if he was training the female who allegedly flew into the passenger jet. The helo was off course by a large margin from what I've read.

Like that DEI caused the plane crash?

Oh, wait - sometimes lies are ok, right?

We don't know yet but both sides latch on to questionable claims if it fits their preferences.

It is possible that less than qualified people were involved.

Everything I'm seeing call him the "pilot" but also refers to the female as a pilot. I have not seen anything that confirms who was flying.

The helicopter was apparently on a training flight. Speculation is that the unnamed female pilot was flying the Black Hawk while Andrew Eaves was the instructor/check pilot. Let's wait until the NTSB issues its report on the accident before placing blame considering it's not beyond the realm of possibility that the instruments in the chopper could have malfunctioned with the altimeter giving an erroneous reading.

Should anyone be surprised? There is almost an inverse correlation between any statement coming from Donald Trump and the truth. There is a reason why Kellyanne Conway coined the term "alternative facts". It's because anything coming from Donald Trump or a designee speaking on his behalf like his press secretary frequently doesn't deal in actual facts but lies instead.

It's kind of surprising to me that, with the technology available today, all pilots in modern planes do not have access to the radar information that the airport has. A small screen in the cockpit could show where all planes were in the immediate vicinity (maybe with a number next to it indicating altitude), if they could do something to identify the plane the pilot is in. The pilot would then be able to see other flights approaching his flight and quickly decide if they are approaching at his/her altitude.

This is definitely a problem that could be solved with technology. The ATC “shortage” could likely be eliminated entirely by technology with a more streamlined workforce once that is implemented.

I’d say you don’t want to become 100% reliant upon on technology. Some might want to go 100% AI. But then you are 100% vulnerable to outages (like that Crowdstrike situation). You need to keep that human skillset. But everyone keeps referencing how ancient the tech is, situation like this should be 100% preventable via either an automated alert from the ground or the two aircraft “talking” to each other and anticipating a collision. The collision avoidance systems they do have reportedly don’t work well below 1000 feet.

According to my brother who is a pilot, there is the ADSB system that pilots can access via an ipad. Info is faster than radar which is quickly becoming outdated since it is slower.

Airport near San Francisco (and in the landing path of SFO) announces that it will operate under-staffed at air traffic control, despite maintaining the normal level of flights. Air traffic control workers did not like their new contract with the FAA. Looks like they didn't learn anything from D.C. Looks like Trump's efforts to gut the FAA is working out great.
