Although very likely correct, it's the role of the NTSB or the FAA to provide that information, not the POTUS in a tweet.

I agree with that. I'd just say that you aren't going to find as many really good female combat pilots as males. Women are more risk averse. Same for raceway drivers. So you wouldn't want women to be 50% of our military pilots

"Consider him a hero" is a far cry from voting for him.

I've never heard anyone in my circle " consider him a hero".

In fairness, he never says "the best person for the job". That should always be the answer.

Our country has to figure out how to both have fairness and equality for all, but also always pick the best person. Finding a woman of color that he trusts and agrees with is pretty much the same as saying just a woman of color. Finding one he trusts and agrees with is easy. So we all can see what he was basically saying.

Race and equality are big problems, but I dont think the solution is to sacrifice quality. The solution is making sure the qualified minorities are given a fair shot.

They havent gotten that historically. Do that in every case and the problem will be solved

And he chose a sitting US Senator, who previously had been a state AG. She was qualified and he chose her. He didn't just choose a black woman he saw on TV saying nice things about him.

His point was that he would prefer to give somebody a shot from a group that you admit didn't typically get a shot at jobs like that.

For real though, I've never been on a military flight, but in all the times I've flown commercial over the years, I cant recall any women captains, and very few that weren't white guys. Back in the Obama days, one of the more obnoxious right-wing posters here was a commercial pilot. Never thought of it as a particularly progressive field, since I'm guessing a lot of ex-military and wealthier background types (who could afford private training).

Right wing media and social media yesterday were saying it was a female pilot and others saying it was a trans pilot…. I bet Trump jumped on this, which is why he blamed the crew in that tweet.

No question he received the votes. I am just trying to figure out how to decipher when to listen to him, when to tune him out, and how to translate what he says to meaningful words.

I'm not sure he had to be encouraged that much. Its not like he's be accepting responsibility in any circumstance.

I wanted to be a pilot. Got my private pilots license at age 18. Worked 2 years at the airport while attending Jr college. I realized there was no future in aviation for two reasons. 1. because there were a bunch of military pilots coming back from Viet Nam with thousands of hrs of jet engine time logged. 2. Because I had to upgrade my medical certificate once I started working on my commercial license and they discovered a slight color blindness and put restrictions on my license.

    Wow - step back and take a look at this thread;

Couched among the (infrequently) relevant or accurate comments about DEI are : misogyny about women, speculations about race as pertaining to a damn disaster, false characterizations of Biden's hirings, defense of Trump voters, defense of Trump's vile "XO/memo" , and ............

    ......hardly a shred of empathy
......hardly a shred of legitimate discussion or compromise seeking
......no longer much of a discussion of the actual issue

This division is insane - way worse than when Obama, Bush or Biden were in charge.

I wonder why this is? Is it possibly because the very leader of our country again took a tragic disaster and crassly sought to score cheap political points?

How can it be possible that people -anyone- fails to see the common denominator in our current toxic atmosphere? It's absolutely amazing.

Trump said he was going to nominate a woman for SCOTUS before he put up Barrett. Was that a DEI pick? I do not recall anger about it and do not recall arguments that he was lowering the bar by considering gender.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg death: Trump to nominate woman to fill Supreme Court seat

"I will be putting forth a nominee next week. It will be a woman," Mr Trump said at a campaign rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Saturday. "I think it should be a woman because I actually like women much more than men."

Yeah, and I guarantee you could go to the campaign website and buy "Latinos for Trump" shirts, so the poster's claim they dont do identitarian signaling things like that is absurd on its face.

You say "risk-averse," like it's a bad thing. It's not synonymous with timid or cowardly, and it doesn't imply a lack of judgment. Anyway, I doubt if women who become combat pilots can be grouped with the meek and weak female stereotype.

The "hero," thing was hyperbolic. I'd be interested in knowing why he has such a large Christian following though. It can't all be about abortion, can it?
