Yeah and whoever made up that “following seas” line never spent much time in a boat

“Fair winds and following seas”? I think that guy was on a boat with sails. It’s still not really bad unless it’s big seas, and that’s bad no matter what your heading is. A big following sea also turns into an overtaking sea, and that’s no fun at all. Probably the reason you don’t like the following seas line, which is not really what that guy was talking about.

Sure man whatever you say. I’ve buried the bow of a 15 foot outboard in following seas, and buried the bow of a 32 foot twin drive in following seas — and boats in between. I’m speaking from experience here. Sure it’s not a big deal if the seas are light, but when big rollers line up on your stern it’s a very busy game working the throttles and the wheel the entire time to keep things from going to shit in a hurry.

And yes I was having fun with the “fair winds and following seas” line, but I’ve thought that line was funny for a long time.

Fair winds is a big part of that line is what I’m saying. Overtaking seas are bad and that’s what you’re describing. That’s when a following sea is outrunning the boat. A following sea with fair winds won’t have you burying the bow, but it will push your sailboat along nicely. The line is not talking about big rollers. “Fair winds”.

You aren’t wrong. It would help if my bow had been 15 feet above the water line like they were when that saying came about.

My friend, big rollers and fair winds are not mutually exclusive. But hey, we’ve beat this to death.
    Keep the shiny side up
